Description:
[Vaccines] [Women in Medicine] Original silver gelatin print photograph of a Vaccination clinic in rural European village. 1922. size is 3.5 x 5.5 in. Outdoor vaccination clinic administered by women, who are cleaning and preparing the equipment. Six figures stand around a table filled with glass vials, test tubes, and a makeshift hand-powered centrifuge (seated woman holds straps which rotate mechanism. Two clean-cut men in dark overcoats stand among the women; they could be medical specialists from a nearby city overseeing the clinic. While women faced discrimination in pursuing formal medical training to become doctors, they took part in many informal, yet critically important, roles in which they could support public health initiatives. Small loss to bottom left corner, not affecting any figures. Very good condition. Exceptional early photograph of a rustic vaccination clinic.

Signed book " 509th Composite Group History", hardcover, 103 pages. This book is a pictorial album of the 509th Composite Group following them from Wendover Field to them stationed in Tinian. Introduction on first page written and signed by Colonel "Paul W. Tibbets". Across from Tibbets signature Navigator Theodore Van Kirk writes entirely in his own hand: "It was an easy mission because everything went according to plan...The major concerns about the mission were 1. would the bomb work 2. getting away from the blast . Remember this had never been done before and it was a great unknown. When the bomb exploded there was a sense of relief - it had worked. It didn't destroy the airplane. When we looked at the city of Hiroshima it was covered by a cloud of smoke and dust topped by the large mushroom cloud going up to 42,000 ft." Navigator on the "Enola Gay", the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, August 6, 1945. Signed book, "Secret" by Wesley W. Stout, 67 pages with illustrations. Van Kirk writes in his hand on the inside title page: " pages 51. 'Two dozen [referring to the Enola Gay crew] who suffered no scratch had killed or injured some 300,000 Japanese. In the whole war, our dead and missing exclusive of disease and rare area accident was only 225,000. But had we not dropped the bomb it could have been much greater as a result of the invasion of Japan and/or continued bombing. - Pg. 45 - The first sentence is a mistake. It was not 'The Great Artiste' that dropped the second bomb, but another B-29 'Bock's Car'. The Great Artiste has instruments installed for and after the Hiroshima mission so Sweeny and Brock traded airplanes." Signed, "Theodore J. 'Dutch' Van Kirk Navigator - Enola Gay 6 Aug 1945".
