Description:
Collins, London, 1977. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Near Fine. Ants have always exercised a fascination that extends beyond the world of biology. They have attracted the attention of poets and dramatists, and also of those philosophers and political theorists who have envied their apparent industry and rigid and complex communal organisation. The social life of ants is indeed extraordinary. It forms the basis of their entire lives; an ant on its own has no chance of survival. Ants are the only group of insects in which there are no solitary species at all. In this book Dr Brian, the country's leading authority on ants, brings together the results of recent research (much of it his own) into the zoology, ecology and social life of the group. Dr Brian begins by discussing the relationship of ants to other insects, their anatomy and physiology, and then turns to the different species of British ant (with an identification key), feeding, including aphid 'farming' and the… Read more

Grundy I cordially dedicate this copy of a book largely inspired by Her Majesty's French words at Ottawa - Emile Vaillancourt - Outremont, Sep.2. '39"; introduction by T. S. Ewart; illustrated by b/w. photo's; an appeal for Canadian Unity in spite of any differences between language, religion or geographical & regional means of living:- "A belief which is quite common among English-speaking Canadians is that the French Canadian is, if I may use the expression, France-French. whereas he is Canadian French only. He is not anti-British but again he is Canadian and takes, in fact, the same position as do many thousands of English-speaking Canadians - a fact which should be recognized by those who improperly criticise the people of Quebec. Description:
Robert Hale Ltd, London, 2007. Reprint. Softcover. As New. Since 1951, when the last of the Witchcraft Acts was repealed, many books have been written about the reappearance of witchcraft and the development of a pagan theology. Churchmen have denounced it. Sociologists have wondered at it. Journalists have penned sensational stories about it. But until the publication of this book, no one had told the real story of it from the inside as frankly as it is told here. Doreen Valiente, one of witchcraft's most widely known figures, was a close friend of the late Gerald Gardner, generally regarded as the founder of present-day witchcraft. Initiated by him and for a time High Priestess of his coven, Doreen Valiente helped him rewrite his seminal 'Book of Shadows'. She records the break with Gardner that split his coven, the controversy surrounding Alex Sanders, 'King of the Witches' and memories of many other witches whom she has known, including the lady called 'Dafo',… Read more

T. Cook/Midland Temperance Press, Leicester, 1845. First Edition. Hardcover (Half Leather). Poor Condition. Annual Published as a monthly magazine from 1844 to 1846 & gathered as an annual in three volumes of which this is the middle one. The printer & publisher was Thomas Cook, founder of the world-wide travel agency bearing his name. In 1832, Cook moved to Adam and Eve Street in Market Harborough.
