Frontis portrait of subject, with tissue guard, and full page plate of Vallandigham's home in Ohio in text, with tissue guard. Vallandigham (1820-1871) was a lawyer and newspaper publisher from Ohio, served two terms in the House of Representatives, and was the leader of the Copperhead movement during the Civil War. Arrested by General Burnside in 1863 for a speech he had given, he was convicted in a military court and sentenced to two years confinement. Lincoln ordered him released and sent through the lines to the Confederacy. Vallandigham then worked his way to Canada and continued to agitate for the ending of the war. After the Civil War, he practiced law, and accidently shot himself while demonstrating how a gun had been handled for a murder case. This biography was written by his brother.… Read More

Blue cloth, gilt lettering on front cover and spine, 8vo, 328 pp. Marie Louise Van Vorst (1867-1936) was a novelist and muckraking journalist in the early 20th Century. She was in France when World War I started, and after receiving training in London, served in Red Cross hospitals in France. In 1915 she toured the U.S. to gather support for the Allies. This book is a compilation of her letters during World War I. War Service Library bookplate front pastedown, card pocket loosely inserted at rear. Frontis illustration of the author and sixteen illustrations within text. Frontis detached but present, binding weak at title page. Covers show edge wear, fraying top of spine, spine lettering rubbed. Book condition Good+.

Fictional account of the head of a shipping and railroad family and the contesting of the father's will upon his death. Based on the events surrounding the death of Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877), and possibly written by his second son, Cornelius Jeremiah Vanderbilt, who contested the will that left the bulk of the estate to his older brother William. From The Literary World, November 5, 1880: this book is "an attack upon the Vanderbilt family...Two Boston printers declined to print or publish it through fear of suits for libel; and one of them destroyed the stereotype plates prepared for its production." Old paper repair top corner of ffep, small piece of bottom corner missing page115, not affecting text. Owners name front paste-down, no other marks in book. A nice, wide margined copy, text in ruled border. Covers show edge wear, scuffing, joints cracked about 2 inches at top of spine.
