Description:
Hanoviae. Typis Joannis Jacobi Hennei, 1612. Large folio, 327 x 207 mms., pp. [xvi], 1992 columns, pp. [152], attractively bound in 19th full panelled calf, spine richly gilt in compartments, black leather label; some slight wear to binding, but a very good to fine copy of this major work on semitic languages. Schindler (1543 - 1604), a professor of Hebrew and oriental languages was said to have worked for decades on this dictionary, which translates Hebrew and four other semitic languages into Latin. In his Christian Hebraism in the Reformation Era (1500-1660) (2012), Stephen G. Burnett takes account of the comparative similarity of Hebrew and other semitic languages, and the study of them in the early 17th century. Referring to Schindler's "massive" work as "particularly important because it was the first attempt to produce a universal Semitic reference dictionary that provided information on biblical Hebrew, Rabbinic Hebrew, targumic and Talmudic Aramaic and even… Read More

Venetiis. Apud Alexandrum Gryphiumm. 1580. Small 8vo, 144 x 91 mms., foliated 109 [110 111, with verso blank, woodcut on title-page of angel blowing a trumpet, early 19th century quarter calf, gilt rules on spine, olive morocco label, marbled boards. A very good copy. Veneto Paulo (c. 1370 - 1428) is said to have studied at Oxford, but he finished his doctorate at the University of Padua in 1405. Wikipedia asserts that his "philosophy has been categorised within the realist tradition of medieval thought. Following on from John Wycliffe and the subsequent Oxonians who followed him, Paul further developed this new brand of realism, and further renewed Walter Burley's opposition to nominalism. Paul's metaphysical theses are rooted fundamentally in Scotist thought. Duns Scotus maintained the doctrine of the univocity of being and the existence of the universal forms of objects outside of the person's mind. He also maintained Scotus' notion of the real identity and the formal… Read More

Ventignano addresses his preface to Canova (1757 - 1822) who was, of course, still alive in 1814, stating that he (Canova) cannot induce his soul to hope or to fear and that he does not presume to glorify him with his verses. A rare book of poetry on the sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822), widely regarded as the greatest sculptor of his day. Cesare della Valle, Duke of Ventignano (1776-1860) addresses his preface to Canova, who was, of course, still alive in 1814, stating that he (Canova) cannot induce his soul to hope or to fear and that he does not presume to glorify him with his verses. Lucca Per il Busdrago, 1755. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 199 x 125 mms., pp. [x], 213 [214 - 219 index, 220 blank], including half-title, early 19th century half vellum, marbled boards, gilt spine, red morocco label; text lightly foxed throughout, ex-library, with a library stamp on title-page, but a very good copy. OCLC asserts in its listing that this is an Italian version of Reflexions critiques sur les différentes écoles de peinture, which is, of course a work by Jean-Baptise Dubos (1670 -1742) and whose religious and philosophical principles were quite the oppositE of those of .Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, Marquis d'Argens (1704 - 1771). The only North American copy of this book that I found is at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne, which names the Marquis d'Argens as the author. Even with my limited Italian, derived mostly from Italian operas and cookery, it is clear to me that the book is not by d'Argens, but is in fact a commentary on his critical reflections… Read More

This edition of Histoire des Révolutions de Portugal by the Abbé de Vertot, René-Aubert Vertot (1655-1735), is so rare that the ESTC finds only two copies: one at the Bodleian in the United Kingdom, and one at Cornell in the United States. So, this edition is indeed rare, but the book itself is one of the most frequently reprinted and tranlated books of the 18th century. Vertot published the book in 1690 as Histoire de la conjuration de Portugal. In a "General note", one ESTC cataloguer moots, "The imprint may be false; printed on the continent?" (ESTC N49946). FIRST EDITION. 8vo, 201 x 123 mms., pp. [iv] v - xvi [xvii - xxxi Index, xxxii blank], 397 [380 blank], including half-title (soiled) cheaply recased in quarter calf, marbled boards, blocked in gilt on spine. Martinelli (1702 - 1785) came to England in 1748, and with his first publication, Istoria Critica della Vita Civile ( 1752), he "made his reputation as a man of letters, and was reprinted several times both in England and in Italy," as E. H. Thorne records. The Monthly Review for 1758 said of Lettere Familiari e Critiche "his compositions are pure, easy and flowing. The nature of his undertaking required, that he should sometimes write on familiar occasions, and his letters have therefore the defect unavoidable in such performances. They do not always inform us of any thing that it is much of our interest to know; and are more valuable for the mode of expression than for the thing expressed." COPAC locates a copy of Memorie Storiche (1875), but does not give a birth date or death date for Angelelli, nor other details about him.
