Age-toned cut edges. The text block is in very good condition, firm and not marked. No inscriptions or annotations. Overall good condition. In poor red pictorial dust jacket. The bottom half of front is missing; the spine area is ragged; the rest of jacket is in good plus condition. The back cover has illustration from Lakshmi Productions' 'Kadambari, from Goodwin Pictures. With very good plastic jacket over. Not price clipped. Very scarce.

The text block is fairly tight, straight and not tanned or foxed or marked. With many b/w sketches and drawings by E.V. Lucas and fold-out map at rear. Not annotated. Very good minus condition. In good minus turquoise cloth boards. gilt titles and design of round floral shapes to front and spine. The boards are flat and firm, very worn spine ends and sides; light marks to front and rear. "The Clevedon Community Co-operative Bookshop Bindery Team" have repaired a hinge and strengthened with paper and cleaned the cloth. Slightly marked end papers. Gilt top cut edge; the fore and tail edges are slightly tanned; tail edge is deckled. The text block is tight, straight and marked on a few pages - very good condition, especially for age. No dedications etc. Without jacket. Overall condition is good.

First edition 1899 with Grant Richards - 'first published by Methuen and Co in 1905' - a 'New and Enlarged Edition'. In quite good green cloth boards, gilt titles to front and back strip. The covers are tight and straight, grubby edges, corners and spine ends bumped and frayed. The end papers feature b/w illustrations by W. Hyde. The front paste down has tiny blue bookseller's sticker for Henry Walker, New and Old Bookseller, Leeds. Dark brown tinted top cut edge; the tail and fore edges are deckled and very tanned. The text block is in good condition, firm and very lightly tanned around most page edges; sound for 1905. No dedications etc. No jacket.

In burgundy coloured cloth boards, one small pale mark on front, shelf-worn, corners bumped and frayed, but good, tight, straight copy. Spine firm, ends bumped and frayed, lettering in gilt. Endpapers black, clean. Cut edges deckled, age-toned. Text block only lightly tanned. There is a most interesting letter attached to page 89 to Robert Lloyd (from the Lloyds in the book). With portraits, including tissue-guarded illustration for frontispiece.
