Description:
329-353 pages with diagrams and cited references. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Current Anthropology Volume 28, Number 3 complete issue. First edition. The major explanation for the development of Teotihuacan is informed by an ecological model and the assumption that Teotihuacan was an Oriental-despotic state based upon irrigation agriculture. This paper employs a different epistemology to suggest an alternative explanation. By exploring in greater detail the analogies to West Africa upon which the ecological model heavily relies, it questions the significance of irrigation as an impetus for the urbanization of Teotihuacan. Instead of employing abstractions such as nucleation, population growth, and the like, it focuses on the organization of social roles and factors which stimulated work and occupational differentiation. It argues that a city grows in response to the dynamic interplay between exports and imports of goods and services and the work these processes… Read More

Description:
194-210 pages with cited references. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Journal of Anthropological Research Volume 38, Number 2. First edition. Anthropologists rarely have investigated the etiology and role of miracles in social life. The Virgin of Guadalupe is a consequence of one of the world's great miracles. In this paper the Virgin of Guadalupe is analyzed in terms of the political conflicts around the time the miracle was proclaimed; she is best understood as an outgrowth of political conflict and as a political symbol that had significance for it. The concepts of the dialectic and liminality are used to analyze the social and political processes which gave rise to the Virgin of Guadalupe. Liminality provides a time-space context within which, as a consequence of dialectic tensions, symbols may emerge and serve to resolve social contradictions. This conceptual framework explains the miracle of Guadalupe better than one which perceives it merely as a supernatural… Read More

Holmul is a pre-Columbian archaeological site of the Maya Civilization located in the northeastern Peten Basin region in Guatemala near the modern-day border with Belize. The site was first visited by an archaeological research team in 1911, led by Harvard University archaeologist Raymond Merwin. The initial work by Merwin at Holmul (later expanded by George C Vaillant) produced the first stratigraphic ceramic sequence to be defined at a Maya region site. However, the results of this Peabody Museum expedition were not formally published until some twenty years afterwards, and subsequently the site remained relatively little-studied. Excavation and research at Holmul resumed only in the year 2000, as an archaeological group from Boston… Read More

Description:
1 page letter (9" x 5 3/4") with problem on verso to the Romanian composer Wolfgang Pauly. Written from Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. The letter discusses the soultion to a chess problem, which is hand written on verso. Signed by van den Berg. Wolfgang Pauly (1876-1934) was the greatest chess problemist of Romaina. He was also an amateur astronomer who discovered a comet, now named the Pauly comet. He worked with A C White and assisted in the preparation of several of the Christmas Series problem books presented by White to his friends over the years. M Stere recovered by pure fortune the archives of Wolfgang Pauly from his old house which had to be demolished to make room for the communist mega-building called The House of People, hosting today the Romanian Parliament. He was able to read his original copybooks with correspondence, and letters received by Pauly from other great problemists. From this, came the book Wolfgang Pauly: Challenge of a Legacy. It is not known if this is one of the letters… Read More

Although Australian chess literature is a poor relation of its cousins in Europe and the United States, nevertheless more books, pamphlets and magazines were printed or otherwise produced than is generally realized. Because this literature was often aimed at a limited readership and had to be produced as cheaply as possible to find readers at all, much of it is now rare and difficult to find. The second edition of this work was limited to 50 copies which was published in 1978. A supplement ws made to the second edition in 1983 which included items published up to 1982. Description:
40 pages with diagrams. Octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's pictorial stapled wrappers. (Lusis: 521) First edition.
The King's Gambit is a chess opening that begins with the moves:
1. e4 e52. f4White offers a pawn to divert the black e-pawn. If Black accepts the gambit, White may play d4 and Bxf4, regaining the gambit pawn with central domination, or direct their forces against the weak square f7 with moves such as Nf3, Bc4, 0-0, and g3. A downside to the King's Gambit is that it weakens White's king's position, exposing it to the latent threat of ...Qh4+ (or ...Be7–h4+), which may force White to give up castling rights.

167 pages with photographs and index. Oblong octavo (8 1/4" x 10 3/4") bound in original publisher's black wrappers. First edition. The Metropolitan Cathedral Church of the Holy Cross, Our Lady of Regla, and St Francis of Assisi is the main ecclesiastical building of the Catholic Church in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. It is considered perhaps the finest example of colonial architecture in northern Mexico and dates from 1725. The cathedral is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chihuahua. The building is situated on the Plaza de Armas. It is designed in the Spanish Baroque style, and is in the form of a Latin cross, with a dome above the crossing. The facade is interesting in that it involves the use of solomonic columns which were not widely used in New Spain at the time. It has an octagonal window that was shipped from Germany and is considered a fine specimen of the glass-makers art. In addition, the front contains a collection of monuments celebrating the twelve apostles, with a… Read More
