Editor of the Universalist "Christian Leader" journal describes his experiences and observations traveling in New England and the eastern United States. SIGNED by author on inside front cover. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Very light rubbing to cover extremities. Light browning of endpaper margins. Otherwise clean and tight.

Cleveland: The Tower Press, 1943 Textured wraps, 40 pages. The author was born in South Africa and later worked in the U.S. as columnist, courthouse reporter, and lecturer; many of his travel presentations were based upon African experiences. He met his wife while working in Lewiston, Maine (the likely origin of this copy of the book); they eventually settled in Sandusky, Ohio, where Van Stack hired on as lecturer on the ship "Success." Light cover wear, faint cover soil. Interior clean and intact.

Detailed field guide of nearly 400 species, profusely illustrated with 654 color photographs and line drawings and figures by A.C. Budd, J.S. McLean and others. Glossary and bibliography in rear. Light-to-moderate cover wear including moderate 4" vertical crease at lower rear cover. Otherwise clean and tight with unworn interior.

Interesting provenance: bearing the custom bookplate of C. Rankin Barnes, who married Florence Lowe. Unhappy with her lot in life as a minister's wife, Florence rebelled and eventually became known as the notorious Pancho Barnes. Underneath Rankin Barnes' bookplate affixed to the inside front cover is a second prior owner inkstamp (name and address). Otherwise clean, tight, and unworn in a dust jacket with irregular closed tears: 1" closed tear at
lower front gutter; 2" closed tear at upper rear spine; two tiny tears at upper front panel of jacket; 1/4" chip at lower rear panel of jacket. Jacket spine sunned.

Bowie, Maryland: Heritage Books, Inc., 1991 Apparently DEFECTIVE, a partial facsimile reprint of the original publication by B.B. Russell, Boston, 1881. Text begins with entry for "Madrid" page 351 and continues with alphabetical listings for all the locales in Maine through York County. Index includes locales A though L, but first half of the text was never bound in (no indication that this reprint was issued in two volumes). General history of Maine noted on rear cover is not present. Nevertheless an interesting reference which includes Portland, Rangeley, Waterville and some lesser-known locations such as Pattagumpus ( a post office in Penobscot County) , Perkins Plantation, and Vienna. Prior owner address sticker upper title page.
