Description:
[New York]: Metropolitan Museum of Art. Hardcover. [Paul Legrain - binding design]. 4to. Pp. 128. A blank journal using good acid-free paper designed for writing or sketching. "The Metropolitan Museum of Art" stamped on the front pastedown. Bound in simulated leather stamped with an elaborate geometric design stamped five times for each color. A lovely copy with no detracting qualities. Created as a facsimile of the Met's copy of the Paul Legrain binding on Paul Valery's L'ame et la danse (1926). Legrain was known for his innovative arts decoratif designs, using Levant leather with inlays of colored morocco. This handsome copy Legrain's binding somehow manages to capture the dynamism of Valery's work, a dialog between Socrates and Phedre on dance.

The first book published by Heavenly Monkey. Provides descriptions of van Sandwyk's limited and trade edition books issued during the first 18 years of his career. Wessel and Lieberman, for some-20 years served as Seattle's leading antiquarian bookshop, was a steadfast booster of book arts in the Pacific Northwest and, particularly, the work of Charles van Sandwyk.
