Description:
This American athlete entered the record books in 1962 when he became the first pole vaulter to break 16 feet. IPS (magazine stock), 7" X 7 3/4", n.p., n.d. [ca. 1962]. Very good. Inoffensive tape stain at each corner. Probably a portion of a magazine front cover, on a slightly heavier stock, depicting a head-and-shoulders Uelses, hands holding vaulting pole in the foreground and the printed caption "Vaulter John Uelses and the Glass Pole." At upper right, he inscribes it in blue ballpoint "Best of Luck / to Donald Burnell / from John Uelses / 16'3/4"." Couple of words slightly marred by tape stain, but overall bold and attractive.

Description:
This business executive took over the reins of the Maytag Company as president after the last actual Maytag family member stepped down, and upon the death of grandson Fred Maytag II (who became president at age 29 in 1940) Umbreit became chairman of the board and chief executive officer. TNS, 1p, 7" X 10½", Newton, IA, 1960 March 28. Addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Bruno J. Gianetti. Fine. On letterhead of "The Maytag Company," Umbreit complies with a request for a photograph, signing handsomely in full in blue ink. Also present is the aforementioned photograph, an IPS, 8" X 10", n.p., 1960 March 28. Glossy head-and-shoulders informal portrait of Umbreit in suit and tie, superbly signed and inscribed in white ink in a dark portion at lower right (making for excellent contrast): "To George Gianetti / Best wishes for a great / future. / George Umbreit / President, The Maytag Company / 3-28-1960." A fine pair.

Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1909. Hardcover. Decorations by Earl Stetson Crawford. Small 4to. Blind-embossed lavender cloth with gilt lettering and oval color plate on front board. (32pp). Color frontispiece, 5 full-page color plates. Very good. Tight 'n' bright, with just the faintest corner wear; two small edge tears on text page expertly archivally mended. A tight and striking first edition of this charming compilation of shamelessly romantic verse by obscure poets, each page surrounded by ornate pale lavender decorations by artist Crawford (1877-1934), interspersed with lush artwork by Underwood (1871-1929). A lovely production.

Description:
New Haven: Press of Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor, 1886. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff blue wrappers. 20pp. Very good. Text block truly near fine, but mild bit of age toning to outer wrappers (only). Probable sole edition of this unusual booklet printed by "Printers to the Students of Yale College," being a collection of full-page advertisements for local businesses. According to the explanatory foreword (titled "Cash Basis"), "Tickets of the League will be supplied gratuitously to every student of the University" -- and presumably when presented to these merchants the student would receive a special student price. But students are warned that "Tradesmen request that there be no unnecessary display of 'League' tickets when purchasing, as the discounts offered may excite jealousy on the part of townspeople. Students are also requested not to lend their tickets to friends." The first full-page advertisement is, ironically, for "Ammunition, Guns,… Read More

Description:
Fascinating archive of student papers from a University of Illinois engineering undergraduate, dated between 16 January 1894 and 20 March 1896. Consists of 109 "themes" (rectos only) on 130 ruled leaves, each 8" X 10½", each signed and dated on the verso by Fergus. Overall very good. Each bears a strong vertical fold running down center (as turned in), but not weakened; a few show bits of edgewear and the occasional stray stain, one bears a large corner chip (not affecting text) and several multi-page themes are held together with 2-prong brass clasps. Most are quite neatly and legibly penned in ink, a smaller number in pencil. Fergus was a bright young engineering student, apparently a Chicagoan, assigned to the required rhetoric course of "Mr. Clark" -- Thomas Arkle Clark (1862-1932), who began teaching in the Rhetoric Department this same year, became department head in 1899 and was named acting dean in 1900. Needing to write a single-page theme every few days, the resulting mass of text is in… Read More
