A detailed, refined regional study of parts of Asia and the Middle East from the mid 19th century. This map is from the most well-used world geography textbook of the early Meiji period, compiled by former Edo Government officer, Masao Uchida (1838-1876). He graduated from the Nagasaki Naval School and is considered to be one of the earliest Japanese visitors to America. He was sent to Holland from 1863 to 1866, to gather information to complete this work. He started to compile the Yochi Shiryaku in 1870. Notes: Important and early surveillance map of building lots belonging to Mrs. Samuel Ridout (a distinguished Upper Canada family) in the area of Queen Street East and Seaton and highlights the "Roselands" estate. It bears the date of 1856 and is signed by noted Toronto surveyor Charles Unwin (1829-1918). There are additional pencil annotations indicating the lots belonging to F.W. Jarvis, and this is signed and dated 1853 by architect / surveyor William Thomas. There is an additional label [Wadsworth and Unwin, Land Surveyors 1870] pasted onto the map. Wadsworth and Unwin. received commissions from the Dominion and Ontario Governments, Railway Corporations and the City of Toronto.
