Description:
Los Angeles: UCLA Film, Television & Radio Archives. Near Fine. 1985. First Edition. Stapled wraps. [faint handling wear only]. (B&W photographs) Program book for a film series that ran at UCLA from January 11-March 16, 1985, showcasing numerous films, television programs, and radio broadcasts that had been preserved by UCLA at its archive, "one of the nation's preeminent centers for the preservation and study of motion pictures and the broadcast media." This was the first program of its kind presented by UCLA, and was the seed for what would become its long-running, almost-annual "Festival of Preservation" event, which was inaugurated under that title in 1988 and recently (2022) presented its 20th incarnation. Among the dozens of films featured were: Josef von Sternberg's THE SCARLET EMPRESS; Ernst Lubitsch's THE LOVE PARADE and MONTE CARLO; F.W. Murnau's TABU; John Ford's STAGECOACH; Frank Borzage's HISTORY IS MADE AT NIGHT and… Read More

Description:
Garden City NY: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc.. Very Good in Very Good dj. 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. (price-clipped) [solid copy, very light wear to cloth at most corners, small label on ffep from "Central Building Newsstand" with indication of rental rate (the ONLY evidence that this is an ex-rental library book); jacket is very lightly soiled, chipped at top and bottom spine extremities, but still quite attractive]. One of those rooming-house novels so popular in the Depression era; there was just something so appealing about that "Grand Hotel"-style narrative structure, which among other things allowed a writer to string up a bunch of anecdotal material and not have to worry too much about, you know, an actual plot. This one is set in Pittsburgh, "in those flush days after the War when everyone had money and when social and moral standards were changing at a dizzy rate," and centers around the home of a woman named Lucille Bonnard, who took in… Read More

Description:
Los Angeles: University of Southern California. Good in Near Fine dj. 1931. (Vol. XXVI). Hardcover. NOISBN . (no dust jacket, as issued) [a solid copy, but with light dampstaining and page-rippling (mostly along the top edge), and some moderate external soiling to covers, all obviously the result of having gotten a little bit damp at some point; there's also a small nick to the front joint; binding fully intact, internally clean]. (B&W photographs, color graphics) 1930 yearbook of the University of Southern California, covering the 1930/1931 academic and sporting activities at the school. As you might imagine, much space is given to the latter; there are accounts (with photographs) of each game of the Trojans' 1930 football season, for instance, climaxing with their 27-0 drubbing at the hands of national champion Notre Dame (which turned out to be the final game coached by Knute Rockne, who died in a plane crash the following March). Extensively illustrated with… Read More

Description:
Northridge CA: Lord John Press. Near Fine. 1993. First Edition. Hardcover. (patterned paper-covered boards, brown cloth spine with gilt trim; issued without dust jacket) [a touch of foxing to the top and bottom edges of the text block, no other significant blemishes]. SIGNED by the author in blue ink on a tipped-in page at the front, beneath his printed name; one of an edition of 250 hand-numbered copies, this being #119. Updike, who moved to Ipswich in 1957, began reviewing local concerts in 1961 for the town newspaper, as a favor to the paper's owner, a friend; he used the pseudonym "H.H.," a doubling-up of his middle initial (his middle name being Hoyer). From his Introduction: " My concert-going belonged to a youthful, excitable time of life, a time of folly I could almost say, of which these twenty-two reviews, culled from moldering Chronicles, are a foolish residue." New York: A.L. Burt Company. Very Good+ in Good+ dj. (c.1922). Reprint. Hardcover. [solid copy, light wear at edges and extremities, gilt spine lettering a bit rubbed, one-time owner's signature on ffep; jacket a bit soiled, moderate edgewear, minor paper loss at top corners of spine, short closed tears at bottom spine corners, tiny puncture-tear in middle of spine (no loss of spine text)]. "The author here answers the all-important question of what it is that a woman wants -- proves it, too, in a way that only a woman who understands women could. .... A vitally interesting story as to just where a woman's place really is." This was the first of this author's four novels, all published in the 1920s; she had an brief brush with Hollywood when her next book, "The Valley of Content," was filmed (under the considerably sexier title PLEASURE MAD) in 1923; she also appeared on-screen in a minor role in the 1927 film YOUR WIFE AND MINE. Garden City NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc.. Near Fine in Very Good dj. (c.1960, 1959). First Edition. Hardcover. [lightly shelfworn, a couple of tiny spots on front cover near spine; jacket (supplied) is a bit edgeworn, with a small chip at the upper flap-fold; a previous mis-folding has been somewhat corrected (with a new mylar cover), but the jacket still shows the effects]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "For Joan / Shalom / Leon Uris." (See note at end about the provenance of this copy.) "Every reader of 'Exodus' will welcome this opportunity to accompany Leon Uris on his return to the scenes of his best-selling novel. Tourist guides in the Holy Land have been besieged by questions about places mentioned in 'Exodus,' and Israeli tourist officials are unanimously agreed that the novel is responsible for a large part of the increasing tourist trade in their country. Boston: Small, Maynard & Company. Very Good in Very Good dj. (c.1925). First Edition. Hardcover. [light wear to extremities, modest soiling to edges of text block, 1.5" closed tear at top of front endpaper; the jacket is a bit edgeworn, with minor paper loss at a few corners, general age-toning, a few surface-scrape marks on spine]. The first (and possibly last) collection in book form of the "Helen and Warren" syndicated column/feature about a typical American couple, which ran in numerous newspapers from 1910 until the early 1940s. Purporting to portray "married life as it is, not as it ought to be," these stories give us "the intimate and merciless portrayal of the comedies and tragedies that are a part of domestic life." A sort of earlier incarnation of "The Bickersons," Helen and Warren were front-jacket-blurbed as "America's Best Known Couple"; I wonder what Doug and Mary would have had to say about that? .

New York: Elsevier/Nelson Books. Very Good in Near Fine dj. Advance Review Copy. Softcover. [a review copy (with the original publisher's slip laid in) in unprinted paper covers, which the previous owner chose to completely encase in clear tape, as well as having written his name plus date & place of purchase at the top of the front endpaper; there is also one diagonally-creased lower page corner; the jacket is nearly flawless, with just a touch of handling wear and a handful of horizonal stress lines along the flap-folds]. A collection of short stories by this father and son (the stories are not joint efforts, however; each is credited only to one or the other). The final story in the book is by Shaun Usher's 12-year-old son, Peter. (And by the way, was there ever a better name for a family of horror writers than Usher?) .

[Kazakstan]: Sur Tur Books. Near Fine. 1997. First Edition. Softcover. NOISBN . [nice clean copy, very light handling wear, short diagonal crease at bottom right corner of front cover]. (color reproductions) A "history of world cinema on stamps," apparently the catalogue of the personal collection of movie- and entertainment-themed stamps assembled by the author, a Kazakstan-born actor who had at the time appeared in 47 films, primarily Russian, but had also been a stamp collector for thirty years (it sez here, in French), exercising his dual passion for both cinema and philately. I don't know whether this guy is world-renowned in stamp-collecting circles or not (there's something in his bio text about having received five gold medals for something or other), but he sure has put together an impressive collection of international stamps featuring movie and TV stars, film graphics, etc. (the majority of which are related to American or British movies).
