Description:
Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1874 Brick red cloth; decorative gilt title and spine lettering; blindstamped black border decoration. Romantic historical novel set in pre-Civil War Kentucky. Underwood (1825-1894), from Enfield, Massachusetts, explains in a Preface that he wanted to "present a faithful picture of life and manners as they were at that time, which now appears so remote." Therefore this novel presents ". . .the true conditions of southern society as it was. . .[with the] thoughts and feelings of even the noblest southerners . . .tinged with inherited and all-pervading notions concerning the inferior race [sic]. . ." Moderate rubbing to cover extremities, except tail of spine heavily worn and with lower 1/4" of fabric missing. Faint cover stains. Two pinholes to rear cover cloth and holes to text fore edge due to insect damage. Interior clean, tight, and unworn.

Description:
New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1872 Full leather; black and gilt spine label; marbles page edges. Reprint; first published 1861. The Bowdoin College, Maine author indicates in the Preface that this text was designed for "the assistance of those youth who need some knowledge of Mental Philosophy, but are not in situation to prosecute the subject to any great extent." Front board nearly detached from spine, threads still holding. Heavy rubbing and scuffing to extremities; fewscrpaes to front board. Prior owner name, date, places in pencil on front endpaper. Prior owner's last name (Frost) also penciled in block letters on fore edge block. Lower portion of free rear endpaper torn away, no doubt part of the note-passing that seemed to be going on: there are several penciled notes between classmates on the last endpapers. A pencilled limerick (tame) appears on verso of final "Questions" page at end of text. Otherwise clean and intact.
