Professionally framed and matted chromolithograph map revealing efforts by the US to better understand it's possesions, including the District of Alaska. ("Territory of Alaska" was used from 1912 until 1959 statehood.) Exposed area of map measures 16 1/4" x 19", actual measurement 45cm x 38cm. Topography by T.G. Gerdine, R.B. Oliver, and W.R. Hill. Control by U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. At top margin "Surveyed in 1904" and "Datum is mean sea level." A handsome color map showing Nome and, in the lower third of the map, the Alaska coastline along the Bering Sea. Geologist in charge of the production of this map was Alfred H. Brooks. The importance of this map is the 1906 -- the height of the Nome Gold Rush, which differed from other northern gold rushes by the ease with which gold could be obtained from the beach sand at the shown landing place. Withal, a bright, dynamic print. The triumph of Utagawa (1797-1861) refinement is represented in this tableau depicting the pathos and downfall of samurai Kagekiyo and his daughter.

Paper measures 10.5 x 15.75 inches; frame measures 20 x 25.5 inches. Mounted on a board and centered on mat, under glass with a prosaic wood frame. The label mounted on the back of the frame indicates the work was purchased from the artist's gallery, Utley's, on Seattle's First Avenue. Frame with light wear, else Fine. Although undated, "Italian Hill Town" is informed by Utley's 1951-'52 tenure in Siena, where he studied with sculptor-painter Bruno Buracchini. The label for Utley's Gallery, which opened in 1966, presents Punchenello, the ill-tempered figure from commedia del'arte theater. Today, the Utley painting most recognized by Seattleites is "Tribute to Beethoven," since 1988 a 16.5-foot mural on permanent exhibit in the main lobby of the University of Washington's Meany Theater.
