Full green linen with gold lettering on spine, marbled slipcase, (viii), 37 pages. One of an edition limited to 200 copies, 20 being for presentation. Ten engravings on copper and with a forward by David Jones. Printed under the supervision of Douglas Cleverdon. A masterpiece of the Twentieth Century. A new printing of the Jones masterpiece, with the images printed from the original plates. Very good to near fine condition, head and tail of spine are slightly bumped and boards are slightly rubbed. Slipcase in near fine condition with corners slightly rubbed.

Description:
Santa Barbara: Capra Press, 1977. Number 23 0f 26 sets of etchings each signed by the artist Arthur Secunda, who also signed the colophon. The etchings are interleaved with the text, printed in red. The text is comprised of two parts: one, Pliny's description of the eruption of 79 A. D., and the other written by a member of the French Expeditionary Corps who witnessed an eruption in 1944. The loose sheets are nestled into a depression in the wrap-around box with one of the etchings silk-screeened onto the front cover. This is a specially printed limited set of the etchings and text which were also used in a limited edition book that appeared in 1979. Enclosed in a plexiglass slipcase. Slipcase is 19 1/2 x 16 3/4 inches. 15 pages and 15 etchings. Near fine, with some sunning to one edge of the portfolio. A few scratches on the plexiglass.

Designed by Eric Gee, who, assisted by David Vickers, printed the book letterpress. Printed on T. H. Saunders pure rag mould-made paper. Number 72 of 268 copies. Quarter bound in deep blue morocco with boards covered in a striped flannel cloth. Contained in a cloth covered slipcase. The book is in fine condition, the slipcase near fine, with a few minor stains.
