BAO DING CHINA PRC. Very Good. 1975. On offer is an exceptional, historically significant manuscript relic of Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution being a diary handwritten by Xi Tao Fang started during his enlistment in the People's Liberation Army from 1975 to 1978. Xi Tao records and details his life in the military camp, impressions of the army and the strong encouragement by others: from his recruitment officer to the guards that he should "learn from Comrade Lei Feng" a person characterized and praised by Mao as selfless and modest who was devoted to the Communist Party. The slogan was often used in nationwide propaganda. The People's Liberation Army decided to grant him a probationary membership to the Communist Party. After three years, he agreed to become discharged and return to the place where he grew up, named Bao Ding, and was assigned to work at the local petroleum plant. He comments on the positive impacts of the years in the army-strenuous requirements,… Read More

Description:
BEDFORD, UNITED KINGDOM. Good. 1900. On offer is a very interesting and unusual volume - a handwritten book of cordial, wine cocktail and beer recipes from circa 1900 from a very old, established Chemist firm in the UK. The BBC Good Food Guide calls cordials 'capturing the taste of summer' but whether it's capturing a taste or securing a winter's supply, this book has it. The book is about 7 inches by 4 1/2 inched and contains 190 pages. It is about 50% complete. The recipes are generally quite legible and understandable. Taylor, Brawn & Flood Co. Ltd were Chemists in Bedford, UK, about 60 miles north of London. The firm was established in 1780 and continued until 1984. This handwritten recipe book dates likely from the inter-war years - there is a letter enclosed, dated May 20m 1943. They manufactured many different types of compounds and chemicals, including soft drinks and cordials. It is quite likely that this recipe book was used in the manufacture of their… Read More

The letter states, in broken and misspelled English, that the “after sunk the vessels the Prize Master Man” has gone and “run away with the prize from me. They were taking by one of my crusers...a schooner of six guns.” Taylor is requesting any information about the man so that he can recapture the prize. TENNESSEE NEW CALEDONIA GUADALCANAL SOUTH PACIFIC. Very Good+. 1947. On offer is a sensational relic of World War II being a photographic diary with accompanying typescript journal commentary by an unidentified soldier from Tennessee. The Marine did a brilliant job putting together a handmade diary illustrated with two groups of photographs [the kind you might have gotten in the PX during the War]. Our sense is that the author has either returned to the area or hasn't yet left the arena of the War but soon after the War our author begins this charming retelling of experiences both good and terrible in the South Pacific. He uses twenty-five photographs and then details and stories relating to the people he was with or the scenes depicted in the photos. It is heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. The soldier does not tell us his name but he makes references to being from Tennessee. He writes of taking a ship to New Caledonia and of people he worked with and situations he… Read More
