Description:
The first publication of Tolkien in Russian, not known in bibliographies and studies devoted to his work. On pages 30-40, there is a fragment from "The Hobbit" (the first edition in Russian was published in 1976). The name of the translator of the first fragment from Tolkien remains unknown. The magazine "England" was one of the strange periodicals, the very existence of which (like the magazine "America") in the USSR was paradoxical during the "cold war". Nevertheless, it was published by the British government and distributed in the Soviet Union in accordance with the terms of the agreement between the governments of Great Britain and the USSR from 1962 to 1993. In each issue, the final part of the magazine featured a schedule of "BBC Broadcasts in Russian" on the radio. In "England" the articles from the field of culture, politics, economics, science and works of art by English writers were published, the magazine also told about ordinary Englishmen.
