Carlos de Tapia Zenteno (1698-ca. 1767) was an ecclesiastical judge and chief professor of the Mexican language at the Royal University and Pontifical Seminary College. [Jean de Mauregard], 1563.Small folio [228 x 162 mm] of (4) folded oblong leaves: title, dedicatory epistle to King Charles IX signed by Jehan de Mauregard, and 4 pages of text in Latin by Jacques Gohory, followed by 25 engraved plates (out of 26, n° 19 is missing) in black on double-page, mounted on guards. A few marginal stains, handwritten inscriptions crossed out in the lower margin of 4 plates. The plates are not captioned unlike those of later issues.Full brown calf, blind-stamped fillet around the covers, richly decorated ribbed spine, red and lemon morocco lettering-pieces, red edges, hinges, head of the spine and corners restored. Some ll. with damage to the margins. Few marginalia in the margins, owner´s note on title, stamp on title and margin. Some browning, stains and waterstains. Appr. 35 tables in front with hw. explanations in the margins and the image, appr. 20 plates with additional drawings in the image in ink or pencil. Very rare first edition of this violent satire against the court of Rome.
The work has long been attributed to Theodore de Bèze; in reality, under the Rabelaisian pun of the pseudonym Frangidelphe Escorche-messes is hidden the identity of Jean-Baptiste Trento, an Italian from Vicenza who converted to the Reformation in 1541 and took refuge in Geneva. He was received as a citizen of the city in 1559.
