First Limited Edition, First Printing. Limited Edition of 500, of which this is number 221. Inscribed by Taine. Fine in a near fine dust jacket, with light wear along the top and tail of spine and edges. An important early work of fantasy. John Taine was the pseudonym of California Institute of Technology mathematics professor and Historian of mathematics Eric Taine Bell. One of the first books issued by the Science Fiction Specialty Press. An excellent copy, one of the best we've seen.

First Edition, First Printing. Inscribed by Wallis on the front free endpaper. Very rare thus. Wallis was an American lawyer, scholar, politician and fellow of the Royal Society of Northern Antiquaries of Copenhagen. He visited Spain in 1847, and in 1849 the U. S. Government sent him on a special mission to that country to examine the title to the public lands in their former colony of East Florida (on the peninsula), as affected by royal Spanish Crown grants during the negotiations for the treaty of 1819, which provided for the American annexation of Florida, and creation of the Territory of Florida. This book details his travels and includes his commentary on the people, culture, art, architecture, literature, economy and other aspects of the country. Very good in original brown cloth, with edgewear and spotting to covers and boards. Content very good for age, with moderate foxing throughout, but still clear. Octavo. 384 pp. Overall, a nice copy, very rare signed.

This scarce, official printing of the collected laws passed by the Fifth United States Congress, includes the notorious Alien and Sedition Acts, passed in 1798. 'There are three Alien acts, which grew directly out of the XYZ Affair and the failure of the embassy to France. Debate began in April 1798, as the story was reported to Congress. The first bill, the Naturalization Act, was signed into law on June 18, 1798. It increased the residency requirement for American citizenship from five to fourteen years and created other hurdles to citizenship (the majority of emigrants were supporters of the Jeffersonian Republicans). First Edition, Later Printing. One of Thompson's personal favorites. Book 28 in the Oz series, followed by Wishing Horse. Thompson always considered Oz books strictly for children, and was often amused at the positive reception of the book amongst adults. Writing about Speedy in Oz to a friend Thompson said: "You can imagine with what satisfaction and peculiar pleasure I recently learned that Speedy in Oz, one of my own and favorite stories, is now on the required reading list of a great eastern university as an outstanding example of political satire. Need I tell you when recording the side-splitting doings of Sizzero, King of Umbrella Island, Bamboula (his Su-jester), of Meander (the messenger), and Kachewka (Chief Counselor of State) -- I had no such portentous purpose in mind?"

This is a rare copy that has all first edition points but does NOT include color plates. In publisher's original cloth, with color pictorial image matching the dj cover pasted down to front board. Titles and decoration to spine in burnt orange. Blank endpapers (as issued). Internally fine. Ends of spine and corners very lightly bumped. Very good plus dust jacket with wear to the extremities and a bit of chipping to along the edges and ends of the spine; rear dj cover a bit created at top edge. Octavo. 298 pp. Overall, a lovely copy.

Overall, a very nice copy and one of the best in its condition. Captain Frederick Trench Townsend (1838-1924) was a British Army officer in the 2nd Life Guards. He was hunter and traveler who came to North America to hunt for 10 months in the late 1860s. Townsend journeyed more than 10,000 miles across America, not counted his sea voyage from England. He landed in New York, went to Rhode Island, and then hunted deer and wolf in the Adirondacks. He shot wild fowl on the Nebraska plains and re-armed for the west in Omaha.
