Description:
London: William Heinemann 1935. First Edition.
This polemic on the First World War ("a lively indictment of Mars and his backers.") appeared in the run up to WWII and provides a fascinating view into the appeasement debate of the time. The work was inspired by Tomlinson's hatred of war, reflected in both the book's title and amazing jacket art, gained through his years as war correspondent in Belgium and France during the Great War.
A lovely copy, near fine if not better, in an equally near fine, bright dust wrapper with some wear to the bottom folds, two miniscule edge tears and slightly soiled rear panel and spine.
A scarce book in this condition.

Description:
First Edition.
Inscribed by Toynbee on behalf of he and his wife, Veronica, and separately signed in full by Veronica. Loosely inserted are four Christmas greetings, three signed by Arnold and one by Veronica, and an author's compliments card. All items to the same recipient.
A leading specialist in foreign affairs, Toynbee is best known for his 12-volume A Study of History, ranked as one of the top 100 nonfiction books by the Modern Library. Veronica was a frequent co-editor with her husband.
Very good, some spotting to the rear board, staining to front and rear pastedowns and free endpapers in good dust wrapper, rubbed and creased, foxing to the interior, paperclip shadow to front flap.
Christmas greetings signed by Arnold are fine, greeting by Veronica and author's compliments card are tanned.
Though a prolific author, Toynbee's is an uncommon signature.
