Description:
London: John Hearne, 1846. Second edition. 12mo, original green cloth, decorated in blind; professionally rebacked in green cloth, gilt. Frontispiece medallion plate engraved via medal ruling machine; xix, 112 pages; 1 additional medallion plate engraved via medal ruling machine. Cover has some wear; plates with mostly marginal staining; else near fine. A scarce work by an early English coin dealer. Till (d. 1844) practiced his trade at 17 Great Russell Street, which had been a famous salon and card room of the 18th century. His book on coronation medals is perhaps most notable for being illustrated with two plates executed via the medal rule machine, which used a pantographic technique to produce the most accurate and detailed numismatic illustrations of its day. The first edition was published in 1838. Manville 349.

Description:
Letterhead measures 20 by 12.5 cm when folded. Small tear where originally opened, not affecting writing. Very good or better. The letter acknowledges receipt of "the proofs of Gov. Buckingham's head, which were duly received through the Treasurer's office. Though the likeness is not a perfect one, it is the best that the governor has secured, and decidedly better than his portrait just painted for the Senate Chamber." Trumbull mentions his sister, Mrs. W.C. Prime, wife of the author of Coins, Medals, and Seals, Ancient and Modern, published the same year. Ex Heather Hardin-Hudson Library.
