First edition. 8 1/2 x 11, triple-columns, 4pp. Fine copy of the separately printed off-print version of Todd's article in a UT publication about his bibliographic study of the transcripts of conversations President Richard Nixon had with his fellow Watergate conspirators. Todd was able to prove how many typists prepared the 1,308 pages of material (15 in all), and how many pages of material were deliberately altered or suppressed (271 pages!). Twain, Mark [Clemens, S. L.] AUTOBIOGRAPHY, (BURLESQUE) FIRST ROMANCE, AND MEMORANDA. Toronto: James Campbell & Son [1871] First Canadian edition. Original pictorial plum cloth, gilt. Only the mildest sunning of spine cloth, mild rubbing at ends, else a tight clean copy of a very scarce book. BAL explains that the precise status of this edition is uncertain, and it could precede MEMORANDA FROM THE GALAXY, published in March of 1871. Original green cloth, gilt, with Webster imprint at foot. Some fraying of spine ends and corners, light general rubbing; a very good copy. This is the first of the two Webster re-issues using unsold sheets of the first edition of this title (there was a second in 1887). In 1884, after Osgood went bankrupt, Webster took over the unsold sheets of all of Twain's Osgood printings and re-issued this title with cancel title-pages. From Osgood,… Read More

Twain, Mark [Clemens, S. L.] HOW TO TELL A STORY AND OTHER ESSAYS. New York: Harper, 1897. First edition. Original red decorated cloth, gilt, top edge gilt, uncut. A bright crisp copy, near fine. An uncommon title due to the unusually low press run of just 2,000 copies. All copies of the first edition have the misprint ("ciper" for "cipher") in the text; this was not corrected until the book was reprinted. Also, copies of this book without "1897" on the title-page are later editions (not merely "second states" of the first edition) but are often misrepresented as first editions. [TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] TRAMP ART CARVING OF THE STEAMBOAT ST. LOUIS. [n.p., n.d., circa 1900-02] 11 x 14 inches, pine or cypress table top, carved to depict the St. Louis harbor steamboat `Port of St. Louis' which was rechristened the `Mark Twain' when Twain himself piloted her around the harbor during his visit in 1902, a few days after his famous visit to his boyhood home in Hannibal. Although there were several steamboats named in Twain's honor during his lifetime, this is the only one he was ever directly connected with in any way, and was in fact, the last steamboat he ever piloted. A very good tight clean copy, expertly recased. With a Christmas, 1876 gift inscription. The first printing was 5,000 copies, and by January, 1877, 9,879 copies had been printed and bound. Advance subscription orders called for a second printing before the day of publication, so even those very first buyers of this book stood only a fifty precent chance of getting a copy of the first printing. "For once, the natural rights of the small boy were set forth by a great writer who remembered his own childhood, when he had indeed inveigled some boys into whitewashing a fence for him, given pain-killer to his cat, teased his brother unmercifully, and continually sharpened his wits in devising ways of escaping punishment .... [TWAIN, MARK] [Clemens, S. L.] HANNIBAL, MO. LICENSE TAG AND RECEIPT. Hannibal, Missouri, 1941. Window-mounted license tag, unused, with peel-off backing still intact (printed with mounting instructions), with the original receipt made out to a Hannibal resident. This was a city tag, that was required by the Hanniballian authorities in addition to the state tag. Mark Twain's portrait appears at the center of the tag itself which was intended to be stuck on the windshield. The ultimate example of Mark Twain ephemera, and a classic indication of the depth of the Twain identity in his home town.
