Grafton BooksLondo, U.S.A, 1989. First Paperback Edition. Paperback. Near Fine/N/A. black & red titles spine; a volume in the 'Mariner's Library' series; illustrated by b/w. photo's., maps & drawings; cover illust. by Geoff Hunt; introduction by Arthur Ransome; "In 1928, Erling Tambs and his bride set off from Norway in the old pilot cutter, Teddy, with no sextant or barometer, and only one and sevenpence in small change. They had no special destination and no urgency, but it was the beginning of three years of adventurous and often accident-prone sailing amongst islands in two oceans. At Vigo the crew of two was increased by the gift of a dog, Spare Provisions, at Las Palmas by the birth of Tony, and in New Zealand by a daughter, Tui. Moments of high drama occurred, too: the Tambs family were in New Zealand at the time of the great earthquake of 1931, and they were also forced to endure a terrifying and disastrous shipwreck. But the charm of the narrative lies in the…

Andre Deutsch, London, 1974. Second Impression. Red Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. Signed by Editor. silver titles spine; previously owned by the artist Jan Le Witt & signed by one of the editors on the front endpaper with the following inscription: "To Jan Le Witt with friendship from Benjamin Tammuz London June 25th 1974"; jacket design by Jill Henderson; "The seven magnificent stories in 'Meetings with the Angel' by seven Israeli writers (Yitzhak Ben Ner; Yossl Birstein; Amalia Kahana-Carmon; Yaacov Shabtai; David Shahar; Dan Tsalka & A. B. Yehoshua), were all written in the last ten years. The title under which Benjamin Tammuz has collected them was chosen because each of them reflects in some form the Israeli's confrontation with his identity; yet they are so different in style and subject that they must be thought of as 'stories' first and as 'Israeli stories' second. Perhaps the greatest contrast is between 'Early in the Summer of…

Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. b/w. frontis. photo. of the club president (T L Taylor); contents list; list of illustrations; preface; foreword; colour photo. of the Right Honourable Lord Hawke )president 1898-1938; The twenty-five years from 1924 to 1949 cover a period in which Yorkshire were always an important force in the cricket world. Fortunes varied from triumph to disappointment, popularity had its ups and downs, but the performances, the personalities, and the influence of the club remained at all times an important feature of the game. What Yorkshire did and what Yorkshiremen said always made cricket news, some of it ephemeral enough, much of it graven deeply on the tablets of history. In the twenty playing seasons the county championship was won eleven times, and the lowest position ever occupied was eighth in 1947. As the period began, a wave of success was just breaking into the…

From the preface: ÂThe large space devoted to bibliography is only proportionate to the importance of the subject. Reference to sources, where fuller treatment can be found, constitutes a natural and essential supplement to the necessarily condensed statements of a Dictionary. Much time and thought have been given to the selection of titles, and only such have been included as are of real value. The care expended on this part of the task has resulted not only in the correction of errors (wrong titles, dates or places of publication, confusion of different editions,…

Rider, London, 1987. Reprint. Paperback. Near Fine/N/A. cover illust. is The Anahata (Heart Chakra) after Avelon c.1890; "The Heart of Buddhist Meditation is a classic presentation of the Theravada (or Southern) Buddhist teaching. In his introduction the author says: 'This book is issued in the deep conviction that the systematic cultivation of Right Mindfulness, as taught by the Buddha in his discourse on Satipatthana, still provides the most simple and direct, the most thorough and effective method for training and developing the mind for its daily tasks and problems as well as for its highest aim.' The book is divided into three sections. The first of these explains in simple terms the basic Buddhist practices of meditation, through the application of which anyone should be able to develop a state of full mental and spiritual awareness, irrespective of whether or not he or she subscribes to Buddhist philosophy. Printed by John Haviland, for A. Crooke, London, 1638. Sixteenth Impression. Hardcover (Full Leather). Very Good Condition. Overbury's poem, A Wife, was published posthumously in 1614 & ran through six editions within a year, the scandal connected with the murder of the author by poison while interred in the Tower of London greatly aiding its success. It was abundantly reprinted within the next sixty years, and it continued to be one of the most widely popular books of the 17th century. Combined with later editions of A Wife, and gradually adding to its bulk, were 'Characters' & letters of witty aphorisms written by Overbury & his friends (first printed in the second of the 1614 editions), The Remedy of Love (1620;), and Observations in Foreign Travels (1626). Later, much was added to the gathering snowball of Overbury's works.?? Sir Thomas Overbury, close friend and adviser of King James IÂs favourite Robert Carr, Viscount Rochester, had objected to the…

Terence Dalton Ltd, Lavenham, Suffolk, 1969. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/Very Good. Map end-papers in green & white. The Great Ouse river rises in Northamptonshire, skirts a mile or so of the Oxfordshire border before beginning its journey through Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Huntingdonshire, Cambridgeshire, the Isle of Ely and Norfolk to the Wash. It flows through towns such as Buckingham, Bedford, Huntingdon, Ely and Kings Lynn. Its tributaries, with such delightful names as the Wissey, the Kym and the Lark, add the counties of East and West Suffolk, Essex and Hertfordshire. They also connect towns such as Leighton Buzzard, Cambridge, Bury St. Edmunds and Thetford with the main river. Whilst the river as a whole covers such a wide area it is as a Fenland river with extensive drainage and water conservation systems that the Great Ouse is usually considered. Rodney Tibbs has written "Fenland River" not so much as a guide book, in which role it is…
