London. Chatto & Windus. 1880. 20cm, new edition, 433,447,462,476pp., full hard grain dark morocco, marbled endpapers, raised bands, gilt titltes and edges, gilt decorated inner dentelles, hinges starting, thus a very good set. (Lt). The author (1828-1893) was a French critic, writer and historian. His views were that man was a product of heredity, historical conditioning and environment, and these views became the theoretical basis for the naturalistic school. This work, first printed in 1864, was translated by Van Laun and first published in English in 1871-72; it is one of Taine's best known works. He held the idea that history had to be examined in the light of the whole social fabric of any one nation, an idea that he had formed after studying the ancien regime, the French Revolution, and contemporary France; he was of the most influential intellectual figures of this period.
