Original blue embossed cloth, rubbed, a very good copy with 'Lewis and Sons' binders ticket to the final pastedown. pp64 but divided into 2 parts, this is the second edition from 1865. Staining to the first pastedown. Mary Howitt (1799-1888) was an English poet who translated Hans Christian Andersen's works with her husband, William giving this copy an excellent association. An attractive volume celebrating the life and work of Hungarian artist Marta Edinger-Balazs, who was best known as the cartoonist EDMA, but as this book shows, was also a sculptor and artist of great sensitivity and humour. Fully illustrated in colour. We have recently acquired the library of Harry Horlock Stringer who was a leading British potter at the old Fulham Pottery in the 1950's where he concentrated on earthenware. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity. Harmondsworth, Middlesex: Penguin Books, 1980. Soft cover. Very Good. The revised Penguin paperback edition of 1980, signed by Janet Suzman who is featured along with Ian McKellan in the cover photograph in her role as Frieda Lawrence in Christopher Miles' film 'The Priest of Love'. A very good copy, spine curved but the binding is tight, browning and spotting to the paper stock. This book comes from the collection of Walter Stein, a British writer, literary critic and Catholic moral philosopher. Born in 1922, Stein was a Jewish refugee from pre-war Austria, educated by the Quakers in York and eventually a Catholic convert who worked in the Department of Extramural Studies at Leeds University. A Victorian guide to the art of letter writing, including many fine examples by British writers such as Dr Johnson, Sir Walter Scott, Hannah More and Robert Burns. An attractive small volume bound in publisher's embossed brown cloth with gilt spine decoration. The engraved title page, frontispiece and vignettes within the text illustrate the pleasure of writing and receiving well crafted letters. This was a Sterndale Bennett family copy which has a printed genealogy of the Bennett family laid in. Very Good 1919

A Restoration era play quarto from a collection compiled by the financier and book collector, Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid (1778-1859) and rebound by 'T Connolly' of Dublin. [8] pp69 [3], collated and complete as per the English Short Title Catalogue, p32 misnumbered 30. Bound in half vellum over attractive marbled boards with black Morocco label, last quarter of the 19th century, binder's ticket of 'T Connolly, 10 Up. Ormond Quay, Dublin'. In very good condition, gathers A-D are especially fresh, the others show some browning and spotting. The number 6 and a tick inscribed to the title page where an inscribed author's name has been rubbed out through the paper, number 80 added to the advertisement page. From an extensive Irish collection of quarto plays. Very Good 1718

Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall. pp 300 An 1861 edition of Frank Taylor's Confessions including chapters on rogues and fools, the great horse auction swindle and other such horse gossip. Bound in the original green cloth which is slit along the lower hinge; original yellow coated endpapers and some browning to paper stock. Probably a surreptitious edition. Good 1861

Bradford: City of Bradford Technical College, 1950. Hardcover. Near Fine. pp 4, 5 photographic plates. A Certificate of Apprenticeship issued by Bradford Technical College, which is attractively produced with the college coats of arms embossed to the front covers, marbled end papers and edges, and includes five photographic plates mounted on card showing the college engineering workshop, pattern shop, junior drawing office and testing laboratory. Near fine, small stains along the top edge of the lower cover being the only blemish. The publication is undated and there are no details of ownership: the certificate has not been completed and the envelope to the front pastedown is empty. A very smart memento of college achievement. A fine paperback, signed by the author and inscribed on the title page to fellow Scottish author Alasdair Gray "To Alasdair with thanks! 25.10.2013". Provenance: from the recent Glasgow dispersal sale of Alasdair Gray's library. Gray (1934-2019) is acknowledged as one of the most innovative figures in Scottish literature and culture. Painter, novelist, playwright, poet and editor, Gray frequently combined his diverse artistic talents within single works to challenge existing forms. Very good in red cloth, slight spine lean, spine sunned and lightly marked, edges spotted. Internally clean, the first illustration is detached but present. Ownership inscriptions of A G Bloxam 1908 and M F Wallis. This book comes from the collection of the scientist and pioneer birth-control campaigner Marie Stopes (1880-1958) which was inherited by her son the philosopher Harry Stopes Roe (1924-2014) and sold following the death of his widow Mary Stopes Roe in May of this year. Mary was herself an academic and author, the daughter of the engineer and inventor of the bouncing bomb, Sir Barnes Wallis. 1908

Very Good. vi pp 1-512 A Brussels imprint in English of George Gleig's novel "The Chronicles of Waltham", part of a series of Wahlen's Modern British Authors. The book is attractively bound in quarter embossed leather with gilt title over green marbled boards; the spine is sunned, the boards are bright but rubbed and worn to the edges and corners. The binding is tight and the text is complete and fresh with only occasional spotting. Overall very good. Very Good 1835
