Three-quarter light tan polished calf, black calf label on gilt spine, early marbled boards, endsheets. "Rural Scenes," 64pp., 32 plates with superb woodcut engravings; "City Scenes," 76pp., 36 plates with exquisite woodcut engravings. A wonderfully preserved, clean, tight and near fine copy internally. edge-wear to calf. A rare survival indeed.

Original publisher's pictorial paper covered boards with green designs over beige, that open up into the form of a folding folder. 36 superb and highly decorative color plates comprising highly stylized and graphically pleasing studies on form, geometry and color of leaf patterns, blossoms, etc. in light green, ochre, red, dark brown and other colors. Extremely attractive and evocative of both Art Nouveau as well as Secessionist design elements. Near fine, with slight cover soiling. Very scarce.

Superbly bound in full cherry red morocco with attractive rectilinear gilt-ruled frames and blossom motifs at four corners on both covers, very ornate gilt leather doublures, watered silk fly-leaves. Each page is a tissue-guarded engraved cartoon with titles and captions covering England and the USA from 1859-1862. Rebacked with original spine remounted. Wear to corners, spine, else very good and tight.

ALS from E. T. Reed, artist, to John Tenniel, 2+ pp., He sends figures gathered by his father's secretary for the Mediterranean Fleets. "My dear Tenniel, Following are the figures gathered by my father's secretary after great difficulties. The French & Russian were most difficult to ascertain exactly, he says." List of figures given. "Whether the Black Sea ships should be included and or not I can hardly say.

From the Mortimer Collins collection (English Poet and Novelist), and evidently his annotated 'corrections' on the last poem, "The Charge of the Light Brigade," where the stanza numbering has been changed and a new stanza added (2), as well as adding corrections and a few lines at the end, all from later renderings by Tennyson of the poem. Some slight cover marking, very good and tight. Scarce thus.

Similarly bound in 19th Century wavy-grained maroon polished calf, ornate gilt border designs on both covers, morocco labels on spines, four bands with blind-stamped designs. Poems, Chiefly Lyrical, with first issue error, on page 91 (mis-numbered as "19"). 154pp. with errata slip at end and no ads. Poems with "Ouverie" Street imprint on verso of title-page. A matching set handsomely bound with marbled edges on all three sides and marbled endpapers. Both with contemporaneous inscriptions, 1830 and 1833 by Merivale, noted English historian and churchman and main founder and promoter of the famed "Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race" which took place at Henley n 1829. His principal work, "A History of the Romans Under the Empire," was eight volumes 1850-1862. Poems with one thin peeling of leather about 2" long, else both very good or better.

A nice albumen photograph of Alfred Lord Tennyson, by James Mudd, published by Cundall, Downes & Co, 1861 (printed: Published April 15th, 1861 by Cundall & Co, 168, New Bond St. at base) Alfred Tennyson the 1st Baron Tennyson (1809-1892), and Poet Laureate, was a sitter in 97 portraits. Cundall, Downes & Co (active 1859-1865), were artists and photographers associated with 94 portraits. James Mudd (1821-1906), photographer, was associated with 12 portraits.

Superbly bound c. 1900 by Bradsteet's of New York (signed with an ink pallet on front endleaf) in full brown morocco with elaborate bold gilt blocked floral and quatrefoil centerpiece design on both covers, elaborate gilt-tooled spine. The name "Dr. Henry M. Garsson" appears in gilt at the bottom right front cover, gilt dentelles. First issue point of p.91 mis-numbered as "19." Also with the scarce errata leaf and even scarcer two-page advertisement at end. "Carcanet" is spelled correctly (second state point). This is Tennyson's first regularly published book. Bradstreet's was a very well-respected binder and received an 'honorable mention' in de Bois's "Historical Essay on Art of Bookbinding" (1883)/ Henry Garsson founded a munitions contracting business in 1941, and, interesting, after the war, was found guilty of defrauding the U. S. government and was imprisoned. Fine.

A.E.G. Gilt stamped binder's imprint on back lower dentelle, "Fazakerley Manchester." An early edition of the famous Moxon Tennyson with superb wood engravings throughout by D. G. Rossetti, Millais, Hunt and other Pre-Raphaelite artist. Corners and spine slightly worn, foxing present as often found with this title. An attractive and well-matched binding by Fazakerley, noted British bookbinding firm.

Sticker on rear pastedown, "Bound by Leighton Son & Hodge." "H. G. Goodday" [Horatio George] copy, with his signature. Front cover slightly stained and showing wear, internally very good with slight foxing to some tissue guards.

A truly exquisite Pre-Raphaelite fore-edge painting.
