Owner's name (Elder Willard Edwin Done) on front cover, toning around the edges, internally clean. In addition to the Panama-Pacific Expo speech, this edition includes the text of an address delivered by Talmage in Salt Lake City on Oct. 10th, 1915, titled "The Latter -day Gospel Recognized as a Distinctive Religion.

Tight and unmarked, with minimal wear, but some mild age-toning to the pages. Taylor was among the first white men to take up residence in North Dakota, moving to the territory in the 1860s. After a successful career as a trapper, Taylor's fondness for his prey caused him to renounce his profession and seek protection for beavers. This book includes much information on the beaver habits and habitats, as well as accounts of hunting and trapping in Iowa, Nebraska, and North Dakota, and the history of wildlife protection and game laws. Biography of Margaret King, a Canadian-born trained nurse who joined the China Inland Mission in 1896 and worked to promote the welfare of Chinese women and girls of all social classes. She was instrumental in the founding of the Nanjing Bible College for Women in 1912.

At the request of the Senate--in response to concerns expressed by Texas Governor J. Pinckney Henderson about the actions of Stephen Kearney in New Mexico -- the President provides "all official correspondence, since 4th of March last, between this government and the military authorities at Santa Fe, or with the authorities of the State of Texas, relative to the boundary or occupation of Texas, and the reasons why the judicial authority of Texas has not been recognized by the military authority at Santa Fe." Among the documents are a "List of Pueblo Indians who accompanied Brevet Lieutenant Colonel J.M. Washington...on an expedition against the Navajoe Indians" and "List of Mexicans called into the United States service for one month for the purpose of accompanying Brevet Lieutenant Colonel J.M. Washington...against the Navajoe Indians.".

Early (1828) ownership signature of John Hersey of Dennysville [Maine] on front free endpaper, and again on the verso, but then dated 1833 in Pembroke. Light foxing throughout.

Original blue cloth binding with mounted illustration, illustrated endpapers. Rubbing to extremities, binding sound, contents clean. Gustaf Adolf Tenggren (1896 - 1970) was a Swedish-American illustrator. "He is known for his Arthur Rackham-influenced fairy-tale style and use of silhouetted figures with caricatured faces. Tenggren was a chief illustrator for The Walt Disney Company in the late 1930s, in what has been called the Golden Age of American animation, when animated feature films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Fantasia, Bambi and Pinocchio were produced" (wiki).

Describes the research and conclusions of a two-year, grant-funded study of the SFPD that found numerous systemic problems. The Introduction lays out the broad (and familiar) issue quite well: "The claim is heard that police action has become a weapon by which minority groups are oppressed and persecuted, and that police action is often used for political rather than legitimate law enforcement purposes. This belief, justified or unjustified, has become a barrier to effective police work. An early date is confirmed by gift inscription dated 1926 on front pastedown. 317 pp, with frontis portrait of Lawrence and 64 other illustrations from photographs. Original red cloth; no dust jacket. Spine lightly sunned, some toning to endpapers, bookseller's label (The Times Book Club, London) on rear pastedown. Binding sound, text clean. Based on the several weeks Thomas spent traveling with Lawrence in the Middle East toward the end of World War I.
