Printed on Japan paper, with b/w photo-reproductions and colored illustration throughout. Covers lightly rubbed, with a few small, faint spots of soiling here and there along the edges. Internally clean. Printed in occupied Japan.

Half brown cloth and morocco, gilt-stamped lettering on spine; oblong Folio; with 15 signed pencil drawings on paper (about 315x485 mm each), mounted on heavy cardstock with caption handwritten in French, in ink, in lower margin of mount. Circa 1800, with hand-lettered title-page indicating that this collection was mounted and bound in 1930. Cloth blistered; drawing paper a bit toned, with some faint foxing here and there. These extraordinary historical scenes by Chatillon trace the births, deaths, marriages and battles of the Earls of Shrewsbury, from the First Earl, John Talbot (1390-1453), an important English military commander during the Hundred Years War, to Francis Talbot (1623-1667), the 11th Earl, who met his more scandalous end in a duel with the Second Duke of Buckingham. Staple-bound heavy cardstock wraps with tipped on photo-illustration of Mae McAvoy, with her name handwritten beneath; pp. 28, each with tipped-on and hand-labeled film stills and photographic images of celebrities, most with tissue guards. Front cover a bit sunned, lightly chipped along the edges; internally bright and clean, remarkably tidy in its layout and preservation. A collection of 110 images of actors from the silent film and early talkies era, including Inga Tidblad, Mona Martensson, Corinne Griffith, Milton Sills, Norma Talmadge, Colleen Moore, Charlie Chaplin, Lillian Gish, and many more. All images are neatly labeled by hand, with an indexed list of the actors handwritten on the inside rear cover.

An interesting scrapbook, pp. 1-308 covered over with sermons by the Reverend Talmage, neatly clipped from an unknown newspaper and tipped on, two columns of text per page, with about an inch of the gutter (and some of the text of "Report") still visible. Sermons and most of the pages numbered in a contemporary hand. Contains 37 sermons in all, on such subjects as "My First Day in Palestine," "Among the Bedouins," and "Witnesses to the Truth of Christianity (Preached at High Bridge, KY)." Bookplate of Peter Ward, Senator, 13th District, 1888-1889, [New York], on front paste-down.

Accordion-fold text block, in wooden boards with Chinese character carved into top board (painted green, though somewhat faded); 6" x 8.25". 20 panels; one blank, 9 with tipped-on portraits (hand-painted, in full-color), the rest with English and Chinese text. Tears starting up between two panels; one panel neatly mended with tape (barely visible). In custom box.

Near fine copy in very good dustwrapper, which is edgeworn and has a small chip at the top of the spine, and another at the bottom of the rear panel. Attractive pictorial jacket.

Contemporary calf, ornately border gilt-stamped on boards, gilt-stamped lettering and ornament in compartmented spine; 32mo; pp. 443, plus engraved vignette-illustrated title-p., engraved frontispiece. Sipne just a little dry; some light scuffing along joints, at spine tips, and edges of boards. Some light foxing on prelims and terminals, but text block is overall clean and unmarked.

Halle an der Saale: Johann Gottofredo Trampe, 1765. Hardcover. Very Good. 4to (234 x 176mm). [vii], 16pp. Engraved chapter head- and tail- pieces. Quite beautiful decorative boards (period or a little later?); (lightly browned, occasional spots, cracked at lower gutter; lightly rubbed). Rare. The Carmen Saeculare, choral hymn in the sapphic metre, was written by Horace in 17 BC at the command of the emperor Augustus. It was to be performed at the ludi saeculares (ësecular gamesí) by a choir of 27 boys and 27 girls. The mythological and religious song proposes the restoration of the tradition, the glorification of the gods: Jupiter, Diana, and Venus.

Contemporary panelled calf, all edges sprinkled red. 7 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches (19 x 11.5 cm); frontispiece, viii, 301, [9] pp., with 21 engraved anatomical plates. Several minor joint restorations, one margin repaired, but in general an exceptionally fresh copy. An interesting anatomy, with much on the body's fluids and organs, with a corresponding deemphasis on merely skeletal details. Russell 807; ESTC T153620.

[1], 16pp. Full-page engraved frontispiece of youthful shepherdess and 33 full-page engravings (including the frontis. and one folding) after the designs of Bartolozzi, Brown, Cipriani, De Marteau, Lairesse, Le Brun, Le Clerc, Mortimer, Paye, Poussin, Singleton and Vandyke (as listed on title). Text is treatise on the imitative and fine arts and a guided lesson on the plates. Modern quarter calf over marbled paper boards; (plates marginally foxed, light occasional stains). Charles Taylor, scholar and engraver, was a devout pupil of Bartolozzi and created this technique book, as the title suggests, promoting the study of art.

Contemporary marbled paper, backed in morocco, spine ruled and lettered in gilt; 8vo (213x131mm); pp. 80, plus 8 plates at rear. N.d., but ad on recto of title-page dated 1810. Binding worn and scuffed, but nonetheless sturdy! Text block a little browned. Very faint ownership signature, in shorthand, in top margin of title-page, dated 1824; with equally faint poem in shorthand on recto of plate #1. A laid-in bookseller's note (typed) indicates that that the ownership signature belongs to an important settler in Monterey, California, and that the poem is "scurrilous." That's one way to sell a book. Scarce, whatever the provenance.
