Theodorakis sketched this out while in exile on the island of Icaria, in the late 1940s, Rallou Manou created and danced the principal role, with scenery by Spiros Vasiliou. It became quite popular and was performed many times in the 1950s. In 1988 the composer used this work in part for a ballet, Zorbas. After an introduction, Carnaval spins out a ten dance musical suite.
