A nice insight into the social history of Japan at the beginning of the Genroku Period, which was "characterized by a rapidly expanding commercial economy and the development of a vibrant urban culture centred in the cities of Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo (Tokyo)." (Britannica.)

A thorough history 'of the origin and development of the breed in Herefordshire, a sketch of it's early introduction into the United States and Canada, and subsequent rise to popularity in the Western cattle trade.

Volume 3 is dated 1901, volumes 1 & 2 are dated 1897. Contemporary bookplates to front endpapers of each volume, the cloth of volumes 1 & 2 is slightly darker than the rest. A few light spots of discoloration to front cover, dust jacket has some fading to spine, some soil spots to front cover.

Hardcover, light green cloth boards with gilt lettering and design to both boards and spine, top edge gilt, foredge untrimmed, 9-1/4" tall, 126 pp., pictures and illuminations by Childe Hassam. Toning to spine, soil marks to front cover at title banner, minor flaking to gilt. A beautiful and important book for many reasons, not the least of which is the garden itself, which can still be visited today. It was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1914, but has been restored and maintained by the University of New Hampshire. The binding by Whitman is one of her best, and the Bibliography of American Literature describes it as "one of the most elaborate pieces of bookmaking of the period." (BAL 19923)

Debut book featuring the Armenian-American's breakout story.
