Description:
TORONTO ONTARIO CANADA ZAHLAH SYRIA LEBANON. Very Good. 1921. On offer is an interesting and unique 1921 manuscript diary handwritten primarily by Rose Saba and sometimes, we believe, by her husband Saleem N. Saba. The free end paper states their names and 'Now in Zahlah Syria Former Res. Toronto Ont. Canada.' [We note that Zahlah is part of Lebanon today.] Entries are for the most part in English but there are entries in Arabic which we believe Saleem wrote. Rose writes many interesting entries which range from Saleem's travels throughout to Beirut, Damascus and her own doings at home from the mundane such as ironing, meals, visits and news from home. We also note that they are a Christian family as they frequently go to church. The diary was located in Toronto and we hypothesize that they moved back from Syria at some point. Historians and researchers of early independent Syria and Lebanon will no doubt find this diary an interesting and unique travel relic of the times.… Read More

On offer is a collection of copied letters of and statements by Ebenezer Sage, a United States Representative from New York, all dealing with the War of 1812 and the state of American politics at that crucial time. The 22 page, handwritten gathering appears to have been taken out of a much larger manuscript dealing exclusively with the War of 1812, its lead up, and its aftermath. There are three letters by Sage to friends, and a collection of written statements made by him. The first letter is described as a “Copy of a letter written to Ebenezer Sage, M.C., 12th Congress of Sag Harbor, N.Y. to Dr. William Crawford of Gettysburg, Pa. July 24th, 1814.” It begins, “Dear friend. You must pay a pistareen to the Revenue for this letter, which is in greater want of the money than you are. Chambersburg Pennsylvania Penn PA. Good with no dust jacket. Softcover. On offer is a small journal that offers a very stark picture of the life of many women in America who fell on the hardest of times at the beginning of the Great Depression. It also includes a reference to what became known as the “Crime of the Century”. The journal covers time periods in 1929 through 1933 but there are only sporadic entries made. The author of this journal is Mary Sample of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. Our informal research has not been able to find any additional biographical information about her. However, there are a number of context clues that give us a picture of who she was. She was likely in her late 50s (based on her husband’s age, which is known). She did not have any children. What comes through very clearly is just how unhappy and dispirited she is. Her marriage to her husband has failed and any sense of security she may have had is gone. The journal, actually a small rent… Read More

Rochester, New York. Good. 1931. On offer is an interesting diary detailing the last year in the life of a 1931 Rochester NY police officer. What makes this especially interesting is that mid-way through the year, as his health fails, his wife takes over keeping the daily journal. The diary is a hardbound book (6 1/2 inches by 4 3/4 inches) with about 210 pages. There are 180 pages of diary entries and they are 100% complete. The binding is loose but otherwise, the book is in good shape. The handwriting is quite legible. The author of the diary is 'Will', a police officer in Rochester, NY. His wife is always referred to as 'H' but there is an entry where she is identified as 'Harriet'. The diary chronicles the last year of Will's life. That he is ill is made clear from almost the first page. Each daily entry has a note about the weather and a reference to how he is feeling. Over the months, the reader can see a slow but steady decline. Included in the entries… Read More

Very Good. 1800. On offer is an exceptional relic of turn of the 19th Century scientific knowledge. The book in question is a large 260 page handwritten tome, touching on a tremendous array of subjects and topics, such as astronomy, cosmology, natural history, advanced mathematics, physics, and more. The book dates from somewhere between 1790 and 1810. It’s author is unknown. What is known is the author is a student of a “Professor Sanderson” who is mentioned quite often (“Sanderson’s Lectures upon Opticks”; “Sanderson’s Hydrostaticks”; “Sanderson’s Lectures on Sound”). Despite extensive research, who this Professor Sanderson is and where he taught could not be discovered.
