First edition, one of the special issue of twelve copies, six of which were printed on green paper and six on grey paper (our copy is on grey paper). There was a regular issue printed in rather larger numbers for the Bibliographical Society. Presentation copy, inscribed by Sadleir to "N.M. Broadbent from his friend Michael Sadleir, July 1937." Laid-in is a T.L.s. from Sadleir to Broadbent, dated 8th July 1937, presenting this copy to him and describing the paper as "queer stone-coloured paper." Bookplate of Douglas C. Ewing.

Mount Hiei, outside of Kyoto: Enryakuji monastery complex, ca. 1617-18. First edition of this rare and important text (no copy in WorldCat, Kawase, or NIJL), printed with movable wooden type. This is an uncommon example of an Eizan-ban, "editions published at the Enryakuji monastery complex on Mount Hiei outside Kyoto. There were few of these in the medieval period...Eizan printing came into its own on a large scale only from the end of the sixteenth century, with the introduction of movable-type printing. Typographic printing flourished at various temples on Hieizan from the Keicho to Kan'ei periods (1596-1644), and with the publication of Chinese works as well as Tendai scriptures, publication and distribution at Hieizan began to develop into the beginnings of a commercial enterprise."-K.B. This volume originates from Christoph Schifferli's show Books on Books (2009) which he curated at the invitation of gallerist Christophe Daviet-Thery. He displayed 26 artists' books that concern books and their representation. Daviet-Thery then commissioned book designer Saint-Loubert Bié to create the show's catalogue. First edition and quite rare. This is a collection of planned menus, each involving a number of dishes, arranged by the four seasons. The fine full-page woodcut shows a kitchen scene in a wealthy household, with a chef cutting a fish with a knife and preparing ceremonial dishes (all the ingredients are apparent in the background). A female server is carrying a dish to the dining area. The main body of the text lists dishes with their ingredients. The broad categories from which dishes are drawn, listed in the index, include: rice, pickles, many categories of broiled and braised dishes, sashimi, sake-marinated fish, many categories of soups, shellfish, kinds of desserts, fruits, etc. At the end is a list of exotic ingredients with instructions on how to prepare and cook them. First edition of this rare movable type dictionary of renga poetry. This is the earliest Japanese movable type book we have yet encountered (the first book printed in Japan with movable type - using Korean technology - appeared in 1593). It is one of the first dictionaries of renga poetry, written by one of the great masters of the genre. This book is very rare; WorldCat lists only the Kyoto University copy. In 1967, Kawase (Vol. I, p. 559) located a copy at Takagi Bunko. Poetry has always had a central place in Japanese culture, and renga poetry enjoyed enormous popularity in the 16th and following centuries. Developed in the 13th century, it is linked-verse poetry in which two or more poets collaboratively supplied alternating sections of a poem. A very rare and richly illustrated manuscript on military doctrine and practice, compiled during the early or mid-Edo period. Only one or two complete copies appear to be available in Japanese libraries, and none in North America. It has never been published. A Preface signed by Sawai Munekiyo discusses the duties of civil and military officials: "to serve the peace of one's country and the good of its people, that is the substance of civil officials. To serve so that it does not become threatened and act so that it does not fall into disorder, that is the substance of military officials."
