Large 8vo (24.8 x 15.8 cm). 389 pp.; ten full colour or tinted double-sized lithographed plates, [AND] 186 pp.; nine lithographed plates of which one double-sized and two in full colour. Later half cloth over marbled boards. Spine with gilt-lettered black morocco label. = Two seminal works by the French zoologist, medical doctor and photographer Charles Paul Dieudonné Armand Sabatier (1834-1910). The first paper deals with lobsters and shrimps; the second paper is on sharks and rays. Published in the series Mémoires de la Section des Sciences, 2e Série (volumes 1, and 10). Small, skilful repair to two text page margins, light age-toning, otherwise very good, clean. Dean II, p. 376 (for the sharks and rays part).

Roma, Reale Ufficio Geologico, 1900-1912. Two volumes in two. Large 8vo (25.2 x 17.3 cm). 1,046 [xv, 392; 639] pp., 154 [78; 76] text engravings, 19 (of 20) photographs, six tinted or coloured plates and profiles, two large folded coloured geological maps, one folded topographical map and one folded table. Uniform contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spines with four raised, gilt-ornamented bands, compartments with gilt vignettes, two morocco labels with gilt titles. Floral patterned endpapers, marbled edges. = Both volumes deal with the volcanoes around Rome. The first with the Lazio volcano in the Alban hills, the second with volcanoes in the Cimini hills. The first part is volume ten of the Memorie descrittive della Carta geologica d'Italia, the second part is volume 15 of the same. Front hinge of first volume weak, one of the several views on the monte Cavo (plate 2 in volume I) never bound in. Otherwise this is a complete, clean set. Rare. Not in Ward and Carozzi.

Patavii [Padua], Typis Seminarii, 1879-1882. Two volumes in two. 8vo. 1305 pp. ([ii] 619; [ii], 682). Near contemporary uniform grained half calf over marbled boards. Spines with gilt bands and title. Speckled edges. = The very rare original edition, published in eight parts between 1879 and 1882. Editor and chief contributor was the Italian mycologist Pier Andrea Saccardo (1845-1920). There is a 1969 reprint, which is uncommon. Pictorial bookplate on both front pastedowns; label on spines foot; a few light pencil marks, otherwise a very good, clean set. Not in Volbracht (neither in the 2017 supplement), underscoring its rarity.

Aboae [Turku], Frenckell, 1819. 8vo (20.7 x 12.5 cm). Printed title, 68 pp. ([ii], 52, [xiv]). Without wrappers (as published). = A seldom-seen work on Finnish vertebrates, including the complete herpetological and ichthyological section. Written by the professor of zoology Pehr Ulrik Ferdinand Karlsson Sadelin (1788-1848), and Joseph Joachim Alcenius (1798-1853) who defended this work as his thesis. The preliminary pages contain ten propositions, the last 14 pages contain an index and errata list. Sandwiched between pp. 46 and 47 is a title to Partem Tertiam, which has Gustaf Henrik Ingman as second author, and is in fact the list of Addenda et corrigenda in prima Faunae nostrae Fennicae parte on the unnumbered leaves in the rear The first part - not included - was published in 1810 and dealt with Finnish mammals and birds. Uncut; fore and bottom edges, therefore, a bit uneven and frayed; otherwise a very good, clean and unmarked copy. Cat. BM(NH) p. 1779.

København, C. A. Reitzel, 1908. Large 8vo (25.0 x 17.2 cm). 140 pp.; four text illustrations (of fish), one double-sized tinted map, showing Iceland and its named fishing grounds, and isobaths. Later half cloth over patterned boards. Spine with printed title. = This very uncommon work describes 106 species of fish collected in Icelandic waters. Included are synonyms, and notes on their occurrence (distribution, frequency). A bibliography contains 115 references. The map with fish grounds is quite detailed. The small pictorial, ichthyological/ornithological bookplate of "Kühlmann" pasted on the rear pastedown. A very good, spotless copy. Dean II, p. 379.

Paris. Tross, 1865. In two volumes. Small 8vo (20.0 x 13.0 cm). Title in red and black, second title (to the Dictionnaire), xxv, 268, 12, [156] pp. Original near uniform printed wrappers. = The famous first edition was published in Paris in 1632. Especially important is the first dictionary of an Indian language. According to Sabin: "Of this handsome reprint only a small edition was published. Uncut, unopened. a few small chips to the wrappers, otherwise a very good copy. Sabin 74884.

Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1839-1843. Folio (43.8 x 30.0 cm). Title page; index leaf; eight mounted engraved plates by Borromée (one mammals plate hand-coloured); title page, 16 pp.; 33 mounted engraved plates (one with bird eggs hand-coloured) by Traviès and Prêtre. Later paper boards with facsimile label on the front board. = An unique edition, containing an unrecorded combination of the title page to the work, the Mammifères by de la Sagra (1840), the Oiseaux by Alcide d'Orbigny (1839), the text to the "Album d'oiseaux de Cuba" (1843) with the "Tableau synoptique" and the table the planches to both the mammals and birds. Twentieth-century half calf over cloth boards, five raised bands, gilt ornaments and title on spine. = For the series Historia Fisica, Politica y Natural de la Isla de Cuba, edited by Ramón de la Sagra (1801-1871). The bird part of the zoology section (published in 1839) was written by Alcide d'Orbigny (1802-1857) and illustrated by the great natural history artists Édouard Traviès de Villers (1809-1876) and Jean Gabriel Prêtre (1768-1849). Apparently, this work was considered to be beautiful enough to warrant a separate edition for a wider public, using the same plates and artists. Figures are of taxonomically important parts. Several species are new. Published as the Survey's Records, 74(1). The front wrapper erroneously states 146 pages. Light wear to covers, otherwise a very good, clean and unmarked copy.

Calcutta, Gouvernment of India Press, 1960. Large 4to (30.6 x 24.2 cm). Title page, 34 pp.; five plates with explanatory text leaves. Original printed wrappers. = A work on well-preserved Brachiopoda, published separately as Memoir 1 in the series, Memoirs of the Geological Survey of India. Palaeontologia Indica, being figures and descriptions of the organic remains procured during the progress of the geological survey of India. New Series, volume XXXV. Wrappers partly sunned; stamp in front wrapper top margin and title; otherwise a very good, clean copy. Very uncommon.

London, The Palaeontographical Society, 1927 [REPRINT 1968]. 4to (27.7 x 21.4 cm). vi, 62 pp, eight text figures, ten plates. Original printed wrappers. = With several new species and a discussion of the Sowerbyan species. This is the Johnson reprint, which is not as good as the original, however, this is a very good unmarked copy.

Paris, Alexandre Iolas, [1974]. Oblong, elongate leporello with 23 folds (16.1 x 590.4 cm), with stiff printed boards(16.1 x 24.6 cm). = A nearly six-meter-long, harmonica-folded publication, with a signed dedication, in ink, by the author and artist, Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002), to "Wim". Wim is Wim Arent Louis Beeren (1928-2000), former director of the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, and the Stedelijk Museum (municipal museum) in Amsterdam, a leading museum in the avant-garde world ever since its foundation in the late 19th century. As director of the Stedelijk Museum, Beeren was responsible for several important exhibitions, e.g. of Kasimir Malevich, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons, and Sigmar Polke. He bought works by Haring and Koons for the museum well before they became world-famous. Catherine Marie-Agnès Fal de Saint Phalle had an exhibition in the Stedelijk in 1962. Paris, Aubert, [1845?]. 4to. Lithographed title page showing a lion, 24 lithographed plates with about 190 figures, captioned in two languages. Somewhat later blind quarter cloth over marbled boards. = In this little known bilingual work by the French traveller, illustrator and naturalist Felix Achille Saint Aulaire (1801-1889), the mammals - with usually about five to nine species on each plate - are grouped into orders much in the fashion of diverse Buffon editions. The illustrations, however, seem to be original. The first plate shows several human races. It also includes 14 pp. of publications by this rather unknown publisher: Aubert et Cie, Place de la Bourse in Paris. No work later than Le keepsake des Dames pour 1846 is mentioned here, and together with the fact that the chimpanzee and gorilla are not included we assume this work to be from the early 1840's - 1845 at the latest. Original blind blue boards. = A detailed and well-illustated work dealing with all aspects of the red oak (Quercus rubor), its morphology, anatomy, growth, use, etc. written by the Belgian botanist Vincentius Josephus de Saint-Moulin (1804-1837). The author's thesis. Published in the Leiden University's Annales. According to Stafleu and Cowan in 1828. It must be rare as they reported only one copy, in the New York Botanical Garden library. Light dampstaining to the plates, otherwise very good, clean. Stafleu and Cowan, 10091.

Patterned endpapers. = The complete section of the Palaeogene part of a series covering the foraminifers from the Palaeozoic to recent times. A massive work, with many thousands of illustrations, each with details on the author, date, (original) publication, (type) locality, etc. All parts are very uncommon, if not rare; and those that are present usually have various ex library marking, while this set is clean, except for an additional plastic strip with embossed title on the spine foot.

Honolulu, HI, East-West Center Press, 1965. 4to (25.5 x 18.2 cm). 346 pp. [xvi, 206; 92; 32]; 100 full colour plates of 340 species after original watercolours by Tune Sakai; large, double-folded map. Purple buckram with gilt and black title on the front board and spine. In original, printed dustjacket. = Written by Japan's foremost carcinologist, "Mr. Crab", Tune Sakai (1903-1986), and finelyillustrated by himself. Sagami Bay is well known for its rich marine fauna and this important contribution on carcinology includes four new genera, and illustrates 24 new species of which some have previously been described in Crustaceana. Rare to find with the original dustjacket, Dust jacket with some repairs; library stamp on front free endpaper recto; otherwise a very good, clean copy. Not in Nissen ZBI.

Pictorial laminated softcover. = A seldom seen, well-illustrated publication, published as the museum's Publicações Avulsos 2(2). Contains 27 different studies on oceanographical exploration, as well as an index, a photo of all the attendees, and a list of nine additional presentations, that were not published. Well-illustrated and informative.

St.-Pétersbourg, Académie Impériale de St.-Péterbourg, 1905. Large 4to (33.3 x 25.0 cm). 102 pp.; ten lithographed playes. Original printed wrappers. = A fine morphological, histological, cytological, and ontological study. Walensky wrote much more on worms. Published in the academy's Mémoires. It is also listed as Travaux du Laboratoire Zoologique de la station Biologique de Sébastopol. Uncut. Old stamp and some soiling to the front wrapper, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Rare.

Original, uniform printed wrappers. = A seldom-seen publication. In two part. The first contains four studies in two volumes, viz. I. über den Bau der Echiuruslarve; and II-IV, as follows: II. Über die anatomie der Archianneliden nebst Bemerkungen über den Bau einiger organe des Saccocirrus papillocercus; III. Über die Metamorphose des Polygordius ponticus n. sp. mihi, and IV. Schlussbetrachtungen. The second contains a single study, Über die morphogenese der Nemertinen. I. Entwicklungsgeschichte der Nemertine im inneren des Pilidiums. One part signed by the author and one signed leaf by the author as the director of the biological station in Sebastopol. Partly uncut.
