New York: Reinhold Publishing Corporation, (1943). First U.S. edition. SIGNED BY SAARINEN at Cranbrook, May 1943. Saarinen (1873-1950) was a Finnish architect known for his work with art nouveau buildings in the early years of the 20th century. In 1925 George Gough Booth asked him to design the campus of Cranbrook Educational Community, intended to be an American equivalent to the Bauhaus. Saarinen taught there and became president of the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1932. (His son, Eero, a famous architect himself, was responsible for the design of the Gateway Arch and main terminal of Dulles Airport, among others.) Fine with only the barest wear. Lacking the dust jacket.

London: Constable, (1940). First edition. Fanny's adventures as a "nice girl" through the somewhat tawdry neighborhoods of London. Olive boards and slightly cocked spine lightly rumpled, light offset to pastedowns from the dust jacket, page edges a touch soiled. The darkened, period-style dust jacket has some minor losses to the head of spine and back panel affecting lettering, edges and extremities show a bit of chipping. Overall, very good or better.

London: Constable, 1947. First edition. By the famous collector and bibliographer of Victorian literature and author of FANNY BY GASLIGHT. A story of Victorian London, "of mordid [sic] horrible slums, through whose vices rich men made fortunes. A story of dissolute wretches, of men--and women--on the make, of naive leaders. . .of prostitutes, panderers and their associates. . . . Sadleir can write--but it is not pleasant reading." (Kirkus Review, 1946). Near fine in dust jacket with slight toning to spine which shows one small stain, otherwise near fine.

Franklin Center, PA: Franklin Library, 1977. First edition, unspecified number published. Precedes Doubleday trade edition published the same year. Illustrated by George Jones. Part of the First Edition Society series. Full leather, moire endpapers, ribbon marker. Special 1-page message from the author not found in other editions. Laid in is the "Notes from the Editors" with a portrait by Stan Hunter. Fine condition.

(London): Picador, (2015). First edition. Shortlisted for the Booker Prize. INSCRIBED WITH A QUOTE on title page in year of publication, "'Beside him, his children,/ who were listening' [sic]/ Sunjeev Sahota/ Birmingham 8/10/15." (The final line of the novel reads, "Beside him, his children, who were whispering" which, unless the line with "listening" appears elsewhere in the book, is presumably what he had intended to write). A novel focusing on the experiences of migrant workers in Britain. Fine in fine dust jacket with 2015 Man Booker Prize Shortlist bookmark laid in.

Paris: Crosby Continental Editions, 1932. First edition thus: the first English-language edition to be published in Paris. Number 7 in Careese Crosby's short-lived paperback series, "Crosby Continental Editions" published by her Black Sun Press. Translated from the French by Stuart Gilbert with an introduction by Andre Gide. 16mo cream-colored paperwraps with printed flaps; 189 pages. Very good to near fine with minor aging and wear; in the fragile, tattered, torn, and extensively tape-repaired (alas, to no avail) original green cellophane dust jacket. Relatively scarce edition and especially so in any semblance of the cellophane jacket. From the collection of sports writer Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman with his penciled notes on rear blank.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1961. First edition. INSCRIBED on front endpaper, "For John and Mary Beth/ with love/ Jack." His most popular work. Basis for the 1964 movie starring Warren Beatty, Jean Seberg and Peter Fonda. Set in Stonemont which, we assume, is a stand-in for Rockville, MD, as the book itself stems from the author's work experience at a mental institution there -- Chestnut Lodge, which has long since closed. Near fine with front free endpaper faintly foxed; in near fine dust jacket with barest wear.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1961. First edition. Fine in near fine dust jacket with faint sticker shadow to bottom rear panel, small stain to top of rear spine fold, spine ends a little nicked and rubbed, and spine lettering slightly tanned.

Very good to fine in dust jacket very lightly faded at spine, with minor soiling on white portions and a few small chips.

Philadelphia: Curtis Publishing, 1944. First edition. Two volumes. Each including a short story by Salinger that, with the exception of a circa-1974 pirated collection, has never been republished. Large paper, brightly illustrated colored Mailing label top right corner April issue otherwise each is very good to near fine with only minor wear to edges.

Very good with spine showing slight fading and rubbing to silver lettering which is nonetheless bright; in good, somewhat soiled dust jacket darkened on spine and along edges, chipped at spine ends, and with author's name on spine faded and all four flap corners clipped, presumably as issued. Relatively scarce in dust jacket.

New York: Junior Literary Guild, 1930. First edition thus. Printed from the Harcourt plates with reset title page. "Chosen by the editors of the Junior Literary Guild ... as the selection for October, 1930, sent to Older Girls between the ages of 12-16 years." Seventy poems for young people with introduction by Sandburg and illustrations by James Daugherty. 8vo silver-stamped blue moire cloth; 136 pages. Near fine with barest rubbing to edges; in very good dust jacket with quarter-inch chipped from head of spine, and internal tape repair to few splits and tears. All four corners of dust jacket flaps clipped, presumably as issued. Somewhat surprisingly this seems to have been a much nicer production than the true first edition.

Though the publisher suggests on the cover its "preservation as a Lincoln item," it would appear not many people did. 34 pp; stapled, printed green paperwraps. Damp staining to top edge throughout, covers chipped, worn and splitting at spine. Fair to good only but complete. Scarce.

Sanders (1931-2015) was the first woman to anchor a major-network newscast, first woman to report from the field during the Vietnam War, and first female national news division executive. Rock is an Emmy Award-winning documentary producer and professor of Journalism at NYU. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs of Sanders, Leslie Stahl, Faith Daniels, Diane Sawyer, Andrea Mitchell, Carole Simpson, Hilary Brown, et al. Fine in fine dust jacket.

About very good with corners bumped (boards visible at tips), small closed tear to head of spine, and residual tape marks to endpapers; in good dust jacket which appears to have been trimmed but still shows 1/2" chipping and light tape shadow on rear flap fold.

Boston: Little, Brown, 1939. First edition. "Sandoz's angriest and most political novel ... depicts the troubles and responses of working people trapped in the Great Depression. .... When this book was published, Sandoz ... received threats from individuals who felt some of her characters were a little too close to current figures in Nebraska politics" (from the website for the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center). Covers lightly soiled otherwise very good in very good dust jacket with rubbed creasing along front flap fold and few creased tears to upper rear panel.

Kentville, Nova Scotia, Canada: Gaspereau Press, 2004. First edition. Limited edition broadside poem. Number 172 of 200 signed by Sanger, who wrote the poem to commemorate the grand opening of the new Gaspereau Press printshop on September 9, 2004. Letterpress printed on Mohawk Superfine paper by Andrew Steeves on a Vandercook press in three colors-- gold, black and blue-- from Garamond type cast in metal specifically for this broadside to be hand printed. (The heading, "Bookwork," is photopolymer printed). Measures 12.5 x 19 inches. A touch of rumpling and tiny edge creases still altogether very good to near fine.
