Berkeley: Photolab for Serendipity Books, 2010. Fine. Black-and-white photograph. Image 14 by 18 inches on 20-by-16-inch paper. This photograph was most likely taken in 1951, during Mantle's rookie year, when the photographer, Osvaldo Salas, was active taking pictures of the New York Yankees. Salas was a Cuban exilie photographer who was active in New York during the 1950s, before he returned to the island after Fidel Castro's forces successfully overthrew the governent. The print was commissioned by Peter Howard of Serendipity Books, in Berkeley, who somehow obtained the negative and had three (or maybe five--the records are not clear) exhibition quality prints made by Photolab, also in Berkeley. The edition was 5 prints. Fine. Titled in pencil on the verso (back).

Salinas was one of a number of Chicano poets to come out of Fresno, California, in the 1970s. Of all the small presses active in the 1970s and early 1980s, Mango Publications was one of the most interesting, both for the writers they published early in their careers (Jimmy Santiago Baca, Sandra Cisneros), but for their effective use of multilith printing in several colors. This book is printed in two colors for both the covers and text. 49 pages. One of a few hundred copies printed. First edition (stated). A fine copy in wrappers (paperback).

Elementos was an official university textbook for a generation, drawing on the work of Adam Smith, Jean-Baptiste Say, and K. H. Rau. This first edition was reportedly just 500 copies (see The Economics Reader: Textbooks, Manuals and the Dissemination of the Economic Sciences..., p. 163). The book "is divided into a theoretical section, which synthesizes Smith and Say, and a section containing applications to the Spanish case" (ibid.). She posed for portraits by John Singer Sargent and WIlliam Merritt Chase. In 1894, Thomas Edison asked her to dance in front of his new motion picture camera. According to the Library of Congress's web page showing a digital version of the film, "Spanish dancer Carmencita was the first woman to appear in front of an Edison motion picture camera," making her likely to be the first woman on film in the US. In 1895, she returned to Europe where she toured for a time before she married a wealthy Russian who either committed suicide or was murdered by Carmencita after he lost his fortune gambling. Carmencita returned to dancing and toured the US in the early 1910s, where her press agents were happy to talk up her husband's demise in the newspapers.
