(4), 531; 15 full page chromolithograph plates (1 ornate chromolithograph title page + 14 chromolithographs of butterflies and moths, designated I-XIV), frontispiece photogravure of the author at beginning of part 2). Recent one-half green morocco leather, spine with 5 raised bands, with red and black morocco title labels lettered in gilt, over English marbled boards with matching marbled endpapers, 4to (282 x 230 mm). This authoritative work is the earliest monographic treatment of the Lepidoptera of Madagascar. Part 1 covers Rhopalocera, Heterocera: Sphinges et Bombyces and Part 2 covers Heterocera: Noctuae, Geometrae and Microlepidoptera. Many species new to science are described here. Small rectangular stamp of Universitat Basel at the top margin of the title page, no other ownership marks and no signs of use. Very scarce.

Pp. 272, 48 full page fine color plates, 192 text-figures - 32 are in color.  Original blind-stamped orange cloth, in the original cloth-backed color pictorial slipcase (and in the publisher's shipping carton which also has a color pictorial title/author label), lg 4to.  Text in Japanese but with Latin names and some English phrases used throughout.  The volume has high manufacturing standards and is extremely scarce.  It is likely the most uncommon 20th century butterfly book - probably due to a print run of 500 or less copies.

The Villafranchian age is a period of geologic time (3.5-1.0 Ma) overlapping the end of the Pliocene and the beginning of the Pleistocene used more specifically with European Land Mammal Ages. Named by Italian geologist Lorenzo Pareto for a sequence of terrestrial sediments studied near Villafranca d'Asti, a town near Turin, it succeeds the Ruscinian age. This paper provides the first radiometric (Potassium-Argon) dates for the Villafranchian Stage-Age. From the library of marine vertebrate paleontologist Edward D. Mitchell with his circular name-stamp and date received on the front wrapper. No other ownership marks. This rare paper is seldom offered for sale.
