This is a vintage copy of "STRANGE COMBAT" by Sarah Salt. Scarce with its original dust jacket featuring Carmen cover art. 1931 1st edition; Brewer & Warren; New York. Fiction novel with a story-line that includes a boxer and boxing. From the dust jacket flap: "The New York Times has placed Sarah Salt as 'an arresting and important figure among contemporary English authors' even before 'Strange Combat,' undoubtedly her best book, is published. It is hard to say in what way it is her best for her technique has always been individual, clean and rapid; her dialogue has always been fascinatingly real and profoundly revealing. But here her thrust is somehow deeper and her characters take even stronger possession of the reader than did the characters in her earlier books. This is the story of Jane, a sophisticated journalist and Andrew, an out-of-work boxer, simple, impulsive, always dreaming of future triumphs. Moving in intellectual circles, Jane is too aware of approaching middle-age and has a definite… Read More

"Florian ~ The Emperor's Stallion" by FELIX SALTEN (author of "Bambi") with its original dust jacket. 1934; Grosset & Dunlap; New York. From the dust jacket: "With the beauty and poignancy that endeared his 'Bambi' to thousands of readers, Felix Salten here tells the story of an emperor's horse - and of an emperor. How Florian, a magnificent white stallion began his life on an imperial farm in Hapsburg - pampered and loved by the stable boy, Anton; how he received his training in the famous Spanish Riding School of Vienna; how he became lead horse of the Emperor's coach - a career rudely interrupted by the War - makes a tale that all who love horses cannot afford to miss. But the story of Florian is also the story of Austria from 1901 to 1921 - a richly colored pageant of the imperial court." The dust jacket comes with a clear, protective sleeve (not shown).Condition:Clean covers; very light soiling at the top edge of the spine. Sharp cover corners. Lippincott & Co.; Philadelphia. The book contains two color maps (one of which is fold-out), a frontispiece portrait and numerous full-page plates (all illustrations are present). There is an Index at the back. From a review: "Baker spent 12 months exploring the Nile and the area surrounding it. His explorations included the Atbara, Settite, Roya, Salaam, Angrab, Rahad, Dinder, and the Blue Nile. Baker states that 'The interest attached to these portions of Africa differs entirely from that of the White Nile regions, as the whole of Upper Egypt and Abyssinia is capable of development, and is inhabited by races either Mohammedan or Christian; while Central Africa is peopled by a hopeless race of savages, for whom there is no prospect of civilization.'"Here are a few examples of the contents: Girls Carried… Read More

Description:
"The Basil and Josephine Stories" by F. SCOTT FITZGERALD with its original dust jacket. 1973 1st edition, 1st printing; Charles Scribner's Sons; New York. From the dust jacket: "This volume brings together for the first time two series of short stories which F. Scott Fitzgerald had intended to combine. The fourteen stories center on two main characters - Basil Duke Lee and Josephine Perry. The Basil series is clearly about Fitzgerald's own life, from eleven to seventeen; and Josephine is Basil's female counterpart. Two main themes run through the Basil and Josephine stories; social class, which Fitzgerald believed to be a psychological rather than an economic condition; and the effort to dominate life by sexual magnetism. Written for the Saturday Evening Post in the late Twenties and early Thirties, the stories are entertainment of a high order, conveying 'what it was like to grow up way back then and there.' Fitzgerald had thought that the two series, read together, would give the effect of a novel,… Read More
