Description:
Fresno, CA: N.P., 1951. Good. 7¼" x 5". Stapled thin card wrappers. Pp. [26], 59. Good: wrappers heavily soiled and with a ballpoint scribble; moderate staining and dust soiling throughout with a few dogears and penciled owner notations. This is a book of prayers, printed in Armenian and English, written by a leader of the Armenian church and community in Fresno, California. It was published to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the birth of St. Gregory of Narek who was an Armenian poet, monk, and theologian and is venerated as a saint in the Armenian Apostolic and Catholic Churches. Fresno, California, has historically been home to a significant population of Armenian Americans. The similar climate of the region was a large draw for Armenian immigrants, many of whom made their living in agriculture. Several sources agree that the influx began with an Armenian merchant, Hagop (known as Jacob) Seropian, who had first settled in Massachusetts but found the winters unagreeable. In 1881, Seropian… Read More

Description:
Cincinnati, Ohio, 1974. Good +. 40 loose black and white photos, all but 2 measuring 5" x 7". Good plus or better due to varying degrees of wear and/or creasing. This is a group of photos documenting two school events in the Cincinnati area taken by a Black photographer, Nat Sharp, all but two of which have his backstamp. Per Mae Naijiyya Duncan's "A Survey of Cincinnati's Black Press & Its Editors" (Xlibris Corporation, 2011), Sharp was a staff photographer at the Cincinnati Herald as well as Pride Magazine which was published from 1968 to 1978. The event from November 1974 is seen in a 13 shot series with many having a banner in the background reading "1st Annual Falcon and Falconettes Banquet of 1974." It's clear from the ages of the students that it's an elementary school, but we cannot identify either school. Images include award presentations, speakers, and a few show students eating at tables. The other group is a 23 shot series of a student fashion show. While a couple of photos show… Read More

Description:
Los Angeles, California, 1923. Very good. 7¼" x 11¼". String tied cloth over flexible card. 62 pages with 94 black and white photographs adhesive mounted. Most photos measure between 2¾" x 4½" to 5½" x 3¼" with six 5" x 7" or larger; most are captioned. Album very good plus with minor imperfections, photos near fine or better. This album is filled with stunning images of two disparate genres of performance art: live theater and window displays—and the window displays are devoted exclusively to the Fowler Brothers book store, then located at 747 South Broadway in Los Angeles. While not denoted as such, the colleague who sold the album to us says it was acquired with a scrapbook that was compiled by the actor shown here: a Richard H. Sloan who appeared in many Los Angeles plays from 1920-1926 and was stage manager of the Literary Theatre of Los Angeles. We're told that the scrapbook showed that Sloan also created dioramas as well as designed and built sets for some performances. The first… Read More

Description:
Nashville, Tenn: Publishing House A.M.E. Church Sunday School Union, 1895. Very good. 8" x 5½". Blue cloth, title gilt. Pp. 288.. Very good: rear board with light paint splotches; lower inner margin of each leaf with a light crease; a few owner notations. Inscribed by the author to W.A. Hunton on the first blank page. This is a travelogue of a late nineteenth century journey to Africa written by an African American minister and educator, C.S. Smith. Part historical treatise, part personal diary, the book relates information and observations about Africa with a focus on European colonization. Charles Spencer Smith was born in Canada in 1852 and moved to the United States after the Civil War. He taught school under the Freedman's Bureau in Kentucky and Mississippi and became a minister for the A.M.E. Church. He relocated to a pastorate in Alabama and became active in politics, serving in the state House of Representatives from 1874 to 1876. In 1882 Smith founded the Sunday School Union of the… Read More

New York, N.Y.: Forbud Books, Inc, 1966. Good. 5¼" x 7 1/8". Stapled wrappers. Pp. [45]. Good: wrappers heavily worn with moderate staining and some chipping; toned leaves with staining to edges of most. This is a rare and early gay-themed comic book, featuring "Batfag" and his sidekick "Sparrow." We have not been able to locate any secondary sources regarding it, save for an old listing on Worthpoint which stated that the book's author, Grayson Smith, was an alias for Don "Duck" Edwing. Edwing wrote and illustrated for MAD Magazine for nearly 50 years, including the famous "Spy vs. Spy" comic from 1987 to 2002. We were not able to corroborate the information in that listing. In this comic, Batfag was called upon by the police commissioner to stop "Jack the Snipper," the "anatomy separating menace before the entire male populus is walking around without their doozy dippers!!" Our hero sprung to action, vowing, "I've got to get over to that men's * drool * steam-bath fast - and save all those… Read More
