Description:
Wellington: John Mackay, 1900. 8vo, pp. 445, foldout map bound in at rear. Patterned endpapers. Fading to spine, corners a little bumped, but a better than very good copy. Author's photographic frontispiece and b&w photographs throughout. First edition, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR: 'To Mrs. A. Saunders with the compliments of the author R.J. Seddon 1902'. Richard John Seddon [1845-1906] was Prime Minister of New Zealand, leading a Liberal government, from 1893 until his death. His Old-Age Pensions Act of 1868 is regarded as the beginning of New Zealand's welfare state, and women's suffrage was won during his time in office (although his party had to drag him to it.) A colonialist, he believed New Zealand should play the role of 'the Britain of the South Pacific': a year after this book was published, the Cook Islands came under New Zealand control. British-born, there is a memorial to Seddon in St. Paul's cathedral. A nice copy, and scarce inscribed.

Description:
London: Park Lane Films, 1957. Shooting script, 33 mimeographed pp., stapled in to oversized red card wrappers. Typed title label to front cover, typed ownership label ('Park Lane Films Ltd., Quadrex House, Park Lane, W.1.') to inside front cover. Contents very clean, covers a little creased at edges, and with one small (1cm) closed tear to leading edge. MORDECAI RICHLER'S FIRST SCREENPLAY, FOR ONE OF PETER SELLERS' MOST RARELY-SEEN FILMS. In 1955 Peter Sellers was a huge radio star, thanks mostly to The Goon Show, but the film career which would later define him was yet to begin. 1955 was the year he appeared in The Ladykillers, his first major feature, with his idol Alec Guinness. Both the film and Sellers' performance garnered excellent reviews, but somehow it failed to launch him, and for the next two years he continued to work on The Goon Show, appearing on screen only in spin-offs from his radio work -- most notably The Case Of The Mukkinese Battle-Horn (1956), the… Read More

Description:
London: Secker and Warburg, 1971. 8vo, pp. 249. Original printed orange wrappers. Spine a little rolled, a little light edgewear and bumping. About near fine. Uncorrected advance proof copy. EDITOR JOHN BLACKWELL'S COPY WITH HIS INITIALS TO FRONT WRAPPER, AND HIS CORRECTIONS THROUGHOUT. John Blackwell joined Secker and Warburg in the late 1960s when the imprint was still an independent company run by Fredric Warburg himself, and was a constant presence through the company's innumerable corporate takeovers, mergers and changes of managing director. As well as editing Sharpe, John Blackwell played literary midwife to J. M. Coetzee, Michael Moorcock, Tom McGuane, Malcolm Bradbury and Louis de Bernieres, among many others. His emendations in this, his own copy, are made in red ink, and are mostly typographical and grammatical corrections; here and there, deletions have been made in blue.

Description:
New York: E.P. Dutton & Co., 1952. 8vo, pp. 251. Original brown textured boards, lettered in brown on silver to spine. Illustrated dust jacket, photographic portrait of the author to rear panel. A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with just a little light wear to spine ends. First edition. A Mike Hammer title, and the sixth in the series. In the first issue dust jacket, with $2.50 price to the front flap, and with the publisher's triangular framing device to the jacket's front panel. The circular version is more common. Although no priority has been firmly established the triangular device on all copies examined is slightly misaligned, causing it to wrap slightly round the front fold. This would suggest the circular version was issued later to correct the problem, and that this is therefore the first issue. Filmed by Robert Aldrich in 1955 with Ralph Meeker as Hammer. A key pulp title, and scarce in this condition. HUBIN, p. 385

Description:
Boston: Herbert B. Turner & Company, 1904. 8vo, pp. 318. Original green boards, lettered in gilt on front panel and spine. Top edge gilt. Silk bookmark. Very minor rubbing and bumping to corners and spine ends, gilt on spine a little dulled, but still a near fine copy. First edition, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR IN THE MONTH OF PUBLICATION TO FELLOW NOVELIST BURTON KLINE: Burton Kline- with the love of his friend always, Chas. Warren Stoddard 29-Sept-04. Kline [1877-1958] was editor of the Boston Transcript and New York Tribune, and an author in his own right, mostly of short stories. Another instalment of Stoddard's wanderings among (and into) the olive-skinned natives of the South Seas. In this one, published thirty-one years after South-Sea Idyls, Stoddard edges towards candour. In the Story Kane-Aloha he writes: 'It does not matter if in my calmer moments reason cautions me to beware -- my head and my heart don't hitch -- they never did -- and so I have written as I have… Read More

Description:
New York: Harper Bros., 1951. 8vo, pp. 249. Original pale blue textured boards and black spine, lettered in gilt at spine. A little age-toned, some offestting to preliminaries, but a near fine copy in a very good, edgeworn dustwrapper, with three chips to top edge of rear panel. First edition. 'Grace Zaring Stone is the first novelist who has dared to write frankly about a tragic problem -- the struggle of a mother to save her son from becoming a homosexual. Her approach to the subject is feminine, delicate, and profoundly moral.' From the wrapper blurb, which starts off wrong and just keeps going. An acceptable copy of an understandably obscure book.
