Description:
The First UK printing published by Heinemann in 1928. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just a little light pushing at the spine ends and a hint of rubbing to the lower corners. Mild toning to the text-block with light spotting to the prelims and offsetting to the blank end-papers. Small neat bookseller's sticker to the lower front pastedown otherwise from inscriptions. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. A remarkable survivor as the jacket is slightly larger than the book, and is particularly susceptible to wear. Light edge-wear with very mild toning to the spine and flap folds with a few odd light marks. Fading of the green lettering to the spine. The Ralph Keene wrapper artwork is exceptionally bright for its age and looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The author's very scarce second novel. Collectible. Reprints from The Cambridge Magazine, No. 7, January, 1918. The only separate printing. 2 conjugate paper leaves, unbound as issued by 'R.I. Severs, Hobson Passage, Sidney Street and sold at the office 6 King's Parade Cambridge. 1918'. The pamphlet is in Very Good++ or better condition with a little dustiness and minor creasing to the edges. The 'Cambridge Magazine', edited by C.K. Ogden, was the first organisation to publish Sassoon's anti-war poems, starting with 'The Redeemer' in April 1916. It was very much an anti-war publication and Sassoon repeatedly used them to publish verse that no-one else would handle, having been introduced by his friend Edward Dent, and in total they published 26 poems of his during and immediately after the war. The 'Reprints from the Cambridge Magazine' series totalled seven in all, three of which were by Sassoon, comprising 'The Redeemer', 'To any Dead Officer', and the present title. The series was organised by A.T. Bartholomew, and Keynes believed that there were… Read More

Profusely illustrated with B/W illustrations by Bernard Sleigh (1 full page). One full page colour illustration and a colour illustration to the title page. The book was printed under the direction of Leonard Jay at the Birmingham School of Printing. This book has a plain unprinted paper wrapper but I am unclear as to whether the book was originally issued with such but it has protected the book very well. The title 'The Immortal Hour' has been penned to the spine of the paper wrapper. ''The Immortal Hour' is a 1899 play by Scottish playwright Fiona Macleod, a pseudonym of writer William Sharp, loosely based on the Irish myth 'The Wooing… Read More
