Allegory on the Dutch victory over Spain at the Battle of Nieuwpoort, 1600. A triumphal carriage is drawn by chained Spanish prisoners, among them Francisco de Mendoza. Driving the carriage is the female personification of victory who carries a lance with the coats of arms of the conquered cities. Behind her are seated Prudentia and the Dutch Lion carrying a sword and a lance with a freedom hat, and from the back of the carriage sprouts an orange tree with the coat of arms of Prince Maurice (Maurits) of Orange. The procession is accompanied by Concordia, Vigilantia, Fama blowing the two trumpets, and a group of musicians playing various musical instruments. Title page of second volume missing ""tweede deel"" and some browning. Interior of all three volumes with some smudges but good readible. Complete copies.Ulysses von Salis-Marschlins (1728-1800) was a Swiss politician and author. Over dit boek in Vaderlandsche letteroefeningen 1819: Ulysses heeft over het lijden voorbeeldeloos fraai geschreven en heeft (..) ook een voorbeeld van lijdzaamheid gegeven, hetwelk ten bewijze kan verstrekken, dat een gedrag, hoedanig men Melaatschen doet houden, niet hersenschimmig, en geen bloot ideäal is, dat niet zou kunnen verwezenlijkt worden. (...) Zwitserschen Edelman! Zijn deze bladeren een voorteeken, dat de Heere geve! dan gaan Franschen ons stichten, (!!!) en zal zich nog het een en ander openbaren, als heugelijk gevolg van bedroevende tijden.’

Schoonebeek, on typographical title page printer’s mark “Labore et vigilantia.” Stamps on flyleaves: “Bibl. Gymn. Catu” and “ST.-Alloisiuscoll. s’ Gravenhage.” On the title page also a stamp from “Bibliotheek Aloysius-college.” Missing folio P6 and P7 (page 347 – 350) added in photo copy.School edition of two historical works by Sallust, these two works are the only works that are entirely preserved through the years. It is about the conspiracy of Cataline (Catilina) and the war against juguntha. Sallust (86 – 35 BC) dedicated himself to a career as politician and commander with great success in historiography. A third work “Historiae” (covering the years 46 to 34) has not survived the time. The notes by Johannes Minellius, permanent commentator at the firm Leers, largely exceed the text of Sallus in size. The top of the first few pages is cut a bit short. On the last page an Ex Libris in pen: “P. v. Hogen 1702.”Exact reprint of the version from 1685 (see KL0069), that appeared at the firm of Arnout Leers, brother of Reinier Leers, who printed this second edition. All copies of the first edition were sold in 1695, so a reprint was the most logical thing to do. The completely reworked title etched by Schoonebeek is dated 1699.ZKL0070
