Dana Hubbard in 1922, with the aim of educating young Americans in sex, love, and marriage. Provides an important view into the sex education available to the general public in the 1920s, and interesting to see what advice has (or has not) held up over time. Note the inclusion of patriotic rhetoric, aligning sexual health and virtue with patriotic duty (e.g. "Help Your Country Produce a Healthy Strong People"). An open dialogue between parents and children regarding sex is advocated by the author. A public health booklet warning against medical quacks who pray upon people with venereal disease, prescribing quack remedies. Highlights the way quack physicians would advertise their services to men in public bathrooms (p. 13) and through wax figures shows. Advertises the early films "Some Wild Oats" and "The Naked Truth". Single volume (6" by 4.5"), pp. 18, stapled in original green printed wrps.

Nokomis, Illinois, 1866. Good to very good. Dust soiling, some short tears.. Handwritten letter with a fine example of calligraphic drawing depicting a bird in flight holding an olive branch. The letter itself is from a farmer's son to his friend, asking what the friend is studying and relaying family news and offering the above artwork, "a specimen of my Drawing". the post script reads "the above is a specimen of my Drawing, What I learned when the writing school was going on. I had to pay two dollars extra. Single leaf measuring 9.75" by 7.5"), together with original hand-addressed envelope with stamp and postmark (3" by 5.5").

London : Englishwomen's Domestic Magazine, 1864. The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine (EDM) was a magazine published by Samuel Orchart Beeton from 1852 to 1879, with a supplement written by his wife, Mrs. Beeton, between 1859 and 1861: these supplements were later collected as her Book of Household Management. His intention was that it should "tend to the improvement of the intellect". The magazine published articles on middle-class domestic issues, fashion and fiction.. A fashion plate from the January 1864 edition of the publication. A child has created costumes for the print with the inclusion of paper hands, lace and braided trim. Voluminous gowns for both. A little girl in the background playing with a parrot. Housed in an oval 12" x 9 3/4" gold painted wooden frame.

New York, 1949. Leather of the front cover shows wear and is cracked in some places. Some of the cording around the edges is missing or broken. Binding has been replaced with a nylon string. The construction paper is toned due to age.. Anna Louisee Nufer retired as Principle of New York PS 86 on September 19, 1949. On that day she was presented with a scrap book made by the teachers and students of PS 86. The covers are green leather with a tooled copper illustration of the story "There was an old woman who lived in a shoe." The dedication page of this scrap book is also tooled copper affixed to wallpaper, which states the date the book was given to Mrs. Nufer. The scrap book is 23 leaves, and consists of thank you notes in general written by the teacher and signed by all of the students in their respective classes. Chicago, IL: Wm H Gallo & Son, Printers, 1910. Age toning. Staple are rusting.. A brochure for the Crane Sanitarium located in Elmhurst, IL, and founded by Milo A. Crane. The slogan of this sanitarium was "The place where sick people get well and the tired ones rest." The sanitarium sourced its water supply from Mammoth Mineral Springs, located only a few miles away from the town. The water was "highly charged with radium activity and also with sulphur [sic] and iron and many other mineral remedial agents of a nature so necessary for the health of the body." Mammoth Mineral Springs also supplied the water for the entire town of Elmhurst until it was depleted in 1916. While the mineral water was used for various forms of hydrotherapy, the sanitarium also provided other services such as a specialty diets- such as the milk cure-, massages, exercises and Swedish Medical Gymnastics. San Francisco: The Grabhorn Press, 1942. Only five hundred copies were printed at The Grabhorn Press in December 1941. The book is about a community of Russians living on Potrero Hill in San Francisco. There are thirty full-page illustrations in color by Pauline Vinson with captions in red on see-through tissue guards. The illustrations themselves are beautiful pochoir with muted pastel colors. The depict both the people in the community and the places in which they gathered. The book was inscribed by a previous owner. Interior pages are slightly toned. 11 1/4" x 8 1/4

Dedham, MA, 1887. Minimal wear.. A collection of 46 drawings, two (2) 3" sketch books and a movable paper slide card that adds or removes people from the scene. Based on the artwork Max is a bit older than Mary and their works pretty well conform to traditional gender roles. Max has a soldier on horseback, steamships, trains, buildings and maps including stand-up buildings and a lighthouse. Max also drew an group of people with German captions (most likely added by an adult). Mary draws flowers, birds and their nests, pretty geographic designs, a dog, plants and more. Uncharacteristically, Max created a large Cupid with pin pricks and Mary drew a picture of a serpent descending a tree. All found in a folio.

Elberfeld, Germany, 2-Feb-15. General wear.. An amazing letter from J. W. Schlosser to American Heiress, Emily Hockaday Blair Henrotin, in 1915 detailing and observations on the war, both as a soldier and a man on the home front. J. W. Schlosser was a young German man who was studying in England on the onset of the First World War. He returned to his home country and joined the Calvary, and was a part of the Cuirassier Regiment Number 7. (Note: Schlosser spells it Kuirassier in his letter) Schlosser was in the unique position of serving on both the Western Front (France) and Eastern Front (Russia) in the Fall of 1914, before being injured and returned home to Elberfeld to recuperate. This places Schlosser in the position to accurately report on the first year of WWI from all sides (both battle fronts and the home front) from the German perspective. This book is volume 3 and 4 bound into a single volume. Illustrated by Ernest Liebermann. There are twelve (!2) full-page color illustrtations, five (5) additional half page (and less) color illustrations, as well as numerous black and white illustrations throughout. Inscribed on the front blank end papers. There are fifteen songs in each volume, thirty in total. Some of the songs found within the book are: Wer hat die schonsten schafchen (Who has the most beautiful sheep), Des Mantellied (the Mantle Song), Wanderlied (Migratory Song), and Aufder Wacht (On the Wakes). Illustrated board covers. Front cover depicts a young girl wandering through the woods holding a basket of flowers. New York, NY: Robert Sears, 1848. General Wear. Front cover partially detached. Minor penciling. Missing last page and back cover.. A book for housewives containing numerous receipts, or recipes, as they are now called. Both words are derived from the Latin verb 'recipere' which means to 'receive or take'. The book provides 'receipts' for a variety of items, from over two dozen different types of cakes (such as Plum Cake and Hand Tea Cake), to about a dozen different puddings (such as Boiled Flour Pudding and Apple Pudding). In addition to foods, there were 'receipts' for different fruit preserves, pickles, sauces, cordials, and beer. Most of the 'receipts' were short, and only provided a list of ingredients with little additional instructions. Such as "Cymbals", which state "Two pounds flour, half a pound of sugar, half a pound of butter, six eggs, a little rose-water, and a little spice." Hangover, NH: Kimball's Dartmouth Press, 1845. Edge wear. Few margin chips.. A 15" x 12" boardside printed on orange stock bordered in decoratiave elements. Sebre Gustin, Jr. of Chelsea, Vt. wished to advertise that he had recently opened rooms and was willing to provide home visits for interested patients. There are two blank spaces where the town name would be and the specific location of his business would be filled in. He offers, cleansing, fillings, and artificial teeth. There is a "Testimony of Skill" with fourteen names following the statement that they have employed and recommend him. 15" x 12

Akron: Saalfield, 1929. Good. 25 pp. This book was written with the cooperation of Genieve Reily. Tells several stories about Tommy and Jane and their interactions with birds. Fern Bisel Peat has beautifully illustrated this book in both color and B&W drawings. The book is blue hard cover with no dust jacket. There is some edge wear to the covers, particularly in the corners on the front cover where they are also slightly bent. Binding tight with some minimal damage to the cover edges on the top and bottom. A previous owner has written their name on the inside cover, additionally there are two stamps that say "Withdrawn" as this used to be a public library book. On the cover page there is a small red stain. There is general soling and toning throughout. Otherwise great condition. Meaures 9" x 7

National Theatre, New York City: E.G. House, 1838. A 12 .25" x 6 " broadside or playbill promoting a comedy starring the Coopers concluding with a farce titled Advice Gratis! Wednesday Evening, September 12, 1838. Also includes information on future events, pricing information on single appearance to seasonal tickets. . The National Theatre had a larger fire in 1839 and was demolished in 1841. Edge wear and surface soiling.

Amana, Iowa: The Amana Society, 1936. General wear.. This brochure shares a variety of historical and cultural material on the Amana Society, also know as the Amana Colonies, a grouping of seven villages located in Iowa near Iowa City. The booklet describes the government, customs, dress, religion, history, agriculture, and craftsmanship of the the Amana Society. Originally German immigrants fleeing religious persecution, they settled first in New York, and then in Amana in 1855. The seven villages comprise of 26,000 acres, and at the time of settlement, the society practiced a form of communism. In 1932, there was a shift in their society when it incorporated and began to practice a form of cooperative capitalism, for as the booklet states "voluntary communism can only be successful were a group is willing to make this sacrifice voluntarily and unselfishly in compliance with their religious faith or ideals, and that failure is inevitable where this altruistic cooperation is lost." It is unclear if the poem is meant as a farewell for a loved one moving away or passing away. The poem is four stanzas long, the first of which is below: Farewell- but ever bear in mind the kindred heart you leave behind; It's throbbing fainies [sp? feigns] truth would tell, It almost bursts to say farewell Written on a single sheet of paper. New York: Mahlon Day, 1836. 17 pp. Printed soft cover, illustrations. The adventure of the author exploring on a May night and encountering fairies. The writer sees one fairy taller than the rest with a crown of diamonds and the name Gloriana. In her hand is a rose instead of a sceptre with which to bestow the never-fading rose on one who has been most profitable. The writer get s to hear why each fairy believes she should be the recipient. 5" x 3 1/4" wear on cover, foxing.

Philadelphia: American Sunday School Union, 1830. 69 pp. Applied marble paper cover, cloth spine, illustrations. A story of meeting a man who told some friends about God. Their personalities are altered. Describes the emotional and physical changes they go through. 6" x 3 1/4" wear on cover, one corner of marbles paper is torn, staining.

1942. Overall condition is good.. The booklet, as promised, gives an overview to the rules and regulations of bowling for the 1941-42 season. 13 pp. wrappers with stapled binding. Some of the topics discussed are "Pinfall - Legal and Illegal" "Scoring the Game" Foul - Definition Of" and other general rules, as well as some advice for the newer bowler. Each topic has a description which varies in length, along with some small, generally humorous illustrations. There is also a section on the greatest bowling match in history, which is Jimmy Blouin vs Jimmy Smith. The back cover advertises "the famous 'Jimmy Blouin' bowling shoe" with an illustration and guide to the various features of the shoe that make it so great.
