London: A. Millar,, 1760. Octavo (250 x 122 mm). Contemporary calf, red morocco label on spine lettered in gilt within gilt rules, raised bands to spine, edges of boards rool-tooled in blind, green silk bookmark. Bookplate to pastedown. Sackville had been stripped of his military position after refusing to allow a British cavalry charge in the Battle of Minden. He demanded a court martial believing that it would vindicate him, of which this is the record; not only did the court martial find him guilty, but declared him "unfit to serve his Majesty in any military capacity whatsoever". Description:
London: John Lane, The Bodley Head,, 1917. Octavo. Original grey cloth-backed blue paper boards, printed paper title label to spine and front cover, edges untrimmed. Frontispiece view of Constantinople. A couple of bumps to extremities, board edges slightly faded, a few trivial marks to covers, contents clean. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, of the author's first regularly published book. Sackville-West's collection of twenty-two poems, thirteen of which appear here for the first time, was written while living in Istanbul with her newly married husband Harold Nicolson, who was working as a diplomat there. Their house at Cihangir offered Vita her first garden (planting the seed of a passion which would later bloom in her famous garden at Sissinghurst), and their life there initiated the insatiable wanderlust that would characterise the poet's subsequent adventures. Description:
London: Constable & Co. Ltd,, 1918. Folio. Original green buckram, lettered in black on the front board. 10 pages of letterpress, introduction and plate list, 16 colour plates tipped onto mid-green light card stock leaves, plain tissue guards, stub-mounted throughout. Slightly rubbed, some light foxing to the prelims and endpapers, the rear free endpaper particularly spotted, but the plates untouched, a very good copy. First edition, this one of an unspecified small number of special copies accompanied by a second suite of 16 loose plates in an end-pocket, each signed by the artist (all with accompanying tissue-guards). Uncommon, with just nine locations traced in online institutional holdings, one of the IWM's two copies is of this special edition, but lacks four of the extra suite of plates; only the NPG seems to have it complete. The book comprises an attractive suite of caricature portraits of leading British military figures, including "Wullie" Robertson, Capper, Allenby, Cowan, and Cockerill.… Read more
