Provenance: John Hamilton 1739-1821 of Sundrum Castle, Ayrshire; prominent in local politics in Ayr, he had enlightenment interests typical of his age, was a friend of James Boswell who introduced him to Samuel Johnson in 1773 which is recorded in Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides.

FIRST EDITION of this rare Arabic manual printed in Rome at the Propoganda de Fidei Press. Dominicus was the editor of the famous Arabic-Latin dictionary printed in the same press in 1639. Father Germanus [1585-1670] succeded Obicini as Lector of Arabic and as a collaborator on the Arabic Bible project. He later stayed for a time in Persia and ended his life as a scholar in Madrid. There he left his manuscript of an unfinished Qur'an translation and grammaqtical treatises of Persian and Turkish. The Propaganda Press was founded in 1622 and in 1626 a true printing house was established together with a foundry named after the Congregatio. First edition. Samuel Smiles [1812-1904], was a Scottish writer, and social reformer.
Self-Help became an immediate best-seller and one of the Victorian's most important statements on the virtues of hard work, thrift and perserverance. Smiles was a critic of rapacity and complacent affluence and advocated virtues central to the projects of other 19th century institutions that actively encouraged cultivation of the intellectual and moral working-class self such as mechanics' institutes, public libraries and people's colleges.

First American edition, first published with the same title in London in 1831. The illustrations include an operating chair and various dental instruments. In the historical sketch Snell refers to the works of Martin, Berdmore, Fauchard, Geraudy, Larini, Mouton, Lecluse, Bunun, Dubois de Chemant, Hunter, Blake and Fox. The chapters include The Operating Chair, Extraction of the Teeth, Excision of the Teeth, The Dental Mirror, Stopping, Scaling the Teeth and Ligatures for fastening Loose Teeth.

This, together with the author's earlier Britain independent of commerce (1807) are important documents of British physiocrat thought and were catalysts to the construction of classical British political economy by James Mill, Robert Torrens and J. R. McCulloch. Spence's work elicited a body of literature in reaction in which the intellectual basis of political economy was formulated.
