Laid in letter dated 1972 from Mr V C Andree of Havant, Hampshire to Mrs Mary Wilson, wife of Prime Minister Harold Wilson, "Please accept this Book of Poems as promised". Bound in embossed black leather, all edges gilt, engraved plates with tissue guards. In good condition, backstrip loose, a one inch piece is detached but present, the binding is firm, pages are clean and bright. A scarce title. Quarter red buckram over shiny, quasi-marbled, black cloth, lined manuscript paper with HArdman's gift inscription on the first page followed by a prefatory poem and table of contents for poems, many of them in Lancashire dialect and including 'When you hear something wrong', 'What we fight for' (it is 1941) 'Aw'd like to know' ('Is "coffy" reet for Coffee, frend?...') and 'A Gradely Man'. From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. Laid in; two programmes and a flyer for productions of Murder in the Cathedral. The first souvenir programme and illustrated flyer are for a production by E Martin Browne CBE which took place in July 1955 in the magnificent setting of Gloucester Cathedral, in aid of the Fabric Appeal Fund. The second, smaller, undated programme is for a production at Penzance County Grammar School for Boys, with C Kempthorne in the leading role. The book is in very good condition; the plum coloured boards are sunned to spine; the text is browned to extremities with occasional marks and stains. Very Good 1952

An undated reprint from the early 1890s of Mary Anne Sadleir's popular novel, The Hermit of the Rock, bound in publisher's textured green cloth with a Celtic harp in gilt to the upper cover and gilt lettering to the spine. A little fading to the boards; original black endpapers with some foxing to the preliminaries and an ink jotted number at the top of the title page. A good copy which is enhanced by the presence of the decorative publisher's binding. Mrs Sadleir, or Sadlier as she appears here, emigrated to Canada in the 1804s but continued to write fiction with an Irish background for decades after. Good 1893
