Signed and inscribed by Harry Wagstaff Gribble, the prominent playwright, director, actor, and screenwriter, to Alan Hewitt, the American film, television and stage actor, in 1936 when Hewitt appeared on Broadway for the first time under Gribble's direction of the presentation of The Taming of the Shrew. An interesting copy with a theater association.

Largely lost to obscurity in modernity, Shenstone was of significant influence in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Robert Burns referred to him as of of his favorite authors, and later referenced Shenstone in the Kilmarnock edition of his poems, with utmost praise, calling him "that celebrated poet whose divine Elegies do honour our language, our nation, and our species." First Edition of Smith's, who served as Keeper of Drawings at the British Museum, collection of plates depicting architectural views and monuments in London. Despite the book's title, Smith takes a rather broad view of "antiquity," even including an engraving of Hogarth's tomb, who died only decades prior to publication of the book. Large 4to. London: Ernest Nister, 1899. Fair only with contents separated from stapled wrapper, dustjacket with staining, closed tear, and significant separation, and 1899 gift inscription.. A scarce 8-page printing on cardstock of Massachusetts author Sophia P. Snow's poem which was first published in 1884, tells the story of two young children on Christmas Eve who had lost their mother and whose father had lost Christmas in his heart, and which features Santa Claus. Of note, this volume contains an early example of a dustjacket.

Boston: West & Richardson, 1814. Tenth Edition. Very good in contemporary sheep over wooden boards, covered in blue paper. There is loss to the blue paper covering, joints cracked but firm, pages browned. The book is housed in a custom chemise and slipcase.. Originally published in 1800, this edition of Staniford's perennial schoolbook is in scarce condition, being largely unmarked and in the original scaleboards. In Michael V. Belok's 1968 essay "Forming the American Character: Essayists and Schoolbooks" Social Science Vol. 43, No. 1 (Jan. 1968), he uses Staniford's work to characterize the essence of post-revolution education (and which differs in many ways from our present system of education) which emphasizes religion and virtue, from which Staniford selected various Biblical stories but also soliloquies from Shakespeare, passages from Paradise Lost, and Lee's funeral oratory for George Washington.
