A review of recent work in economic anthropology finds three competing approaches: decision theory, culturalism, and neo-Marxism. These approaches are tested with data on four dimensions of the cash sale and barter of fish on Lake Titicaca, Peru. The first is somewhat more successful, although the others also explain some data. Comparisons are drawn with barter and cash sale elsewhere in the Andes. Condition: Light edge wear, corners bumped else very good.

xii+261 pages with numerous tables, text-figures and plates, with 4 plans in endpocket. Quarto (11 3/4" x 9") bound in original publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover. First edition. Felsch's book start with a short but illuminating report on the history of the excavation in the site of Kastro Tigani. The first dit at the hill of Kastro dates back to 1928-1930 when W Wredes uncovered prehistoric material, mainly pottery, from areas described as rubbish pits. The pottery was studied by Robert Heidenreich, who suggested that the course, slipped, burnished, incised, and patterned-burnished wares belonged to the Early Bronze Age and are closely related to Troy I sequence. This view was later supported by W Butler and A Furness. Milojcic in Samos I (1961) was the first to suggest convincingly that the Tigani material may belong to a pre-Troy I date, contemporary with the Aegean Late Neolithic. xviii+174+[7 ad] pages. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's black cloth with red lettering to spine and cover in original publisher's jacket. (Firsts 31) First edition. The last Philo Vance was published posthumously from the manuscript of a draft that was completed shortly before Wright's death. Maxwell Perkins, declined to change anything in it and published it as he found it. As a result, the book is quite short, less than half the length of the early titles. The classic format was followed: the index card and the stamping are in red and the book is bound in black cloth. It was priced at $1.75, the only one of the books not priced at $2.00. The print run was small. With exception of Benson and perhaps the Canary, this is the most elusive of the Vance titles. The Winter Murder Case (1939) is a Philo Vance novella that S. S. Van Dine intended to expand into his twelfth full-length book, a project cut short by his death. The Winter Murder Case seems especially similar to the B… Read More

viii+349+[3 ad] pages with fold out illustration. Small octavo (7 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's black cloth with blue lettering to spine and cover. First edition.Wright wrote as a critic and journalist until 1923, when he became ill from what was given out as overwork, but was in reality a secret drug addiction, according to John Loughery's biography. His doctor confined him to bed (supposedly because of a heart ailment, but actually because of a cocaine addiction) for more than two years. In frustration and boredom, he began collecting and studying thousands of volumes of crime and detection. In 1926 this paid off with the publication of his first S. S. Van Dine novel, The Benson Murder Case. Wright took his pseudonym from the abbreviation of "steamship" and from Van Dine, which he claimed was an old family name. Wright wrote a series of short stories for Warner Brothers film studio in the early 1930's. These stories were used as the basis for a series of 12 short films, each around 20… Read More

There is a general opinion, supported by some of the older authors and by much of the modern ethnological data, that the type of Indian warfare as evidenced in northeastern America in the eighteenth century is not an integral part of the aboriginal culture pattern. This view takes the position that warfare of extermination in the area of stress had its roots in abnormal conditions produced by the fur trade and by intensive rivalry of various European nations for domination. On the other hand, some of the earliest accounts of this area describe warlike activities or raids, based upon aboriginal traditions, prior to any European influence. The purpose of this paper is to present an account of the warfare of the period previous to the development of the fur trade and the struggle for supremacy between France and England, and to attempt to establish… Read More

First edition. A preliminary study of the form and fracture patterns of sheep metatarsals from Jaguar Cave is used to illustrate a method for the quantitative analysis of primitive bone fracturing techniques. Criteria of form, fracture, and function are defined and weighted, on the basis of experiments with green bone, and the aid of computers is enlisted to process the archaeological specimens via these criteria. The data is searched for: a. the definition of a technique of intentional fracture, b. the formation of classes of intentionally fractured and retouched bone fragments, and c. the identification of statistically perfect tools and not-tools, determined by higher or lower correlations of weighted sums. Conclusions are drawn from the analysis of the Jaguar Cave bone and bone from other early collections.… Read More
