London: Vizetelly, 1882. Hardcover. Very good. First edition. Two volumes. Illustrated with nearly 400 engravings. Blue­green cloth blocked in black and gilt, chocolate coated endpapers. Wear to the hinges and edges, inner hinges on Volume I cracked but firm.The inner hinges on volume II have been badly glued at some time. So while the set gives a near very good appearance, the bindings are only good at best.

A handsomely printed and bound work, selected and annotated with an introductory essay by George Saintsbury. Signed in ink on the limitation page, Charles Whittingham & Co., proprietors of the Chiswick Press. The first selection is form Malory: The Death of Lancelot.

Binding worn and rubbed else very good. Color frontispiece. edgewear. Errata slip present. When bound, blank pages of graph paper were included, some of which have been used for extensive notes on the book. Pencil corrections (?) on some pages with machine specifications, many notes in a neat hand in French, clearly this book had a previous owner who had significant knowledge of the subject. Tabs have been added by the previous owner on added pages. Added pages include samples of thread each about 1 by 2 inches. Also some fabric swatches. Original photograph of Saladin tipped on to front free end paper. Following page 398 are: One yarn sample which appears to be cashmere, Two pages with fabric swatches 5 in all, Page hand numbered 414 has two fiber samples, followed by a page with another 12 fiber samples. Green cloth spine printed in lighter green, printed paper over boards. 32 stiff black paper pages with paper sample books to the front side. There are a total of 40 paper samples books as well as examples of stationery and envelopes. Reference chart of prices and selling agents in rfear pocket. Some pages partially detached else this is a very good copy with light wear to the edges and corners. .

New York: Kuttroff, Pickhardt & Co, 1920. Hardcover. Good. 4to. 8pp of thick card in which are inset 32 samples dyes threads per page, for a total of 256 samples, going through rose hues, then blues, greens, grays and violets, then reds and pinks, yellows, oranges and browns. Black textured cloth, gilt title on upper board. There is insect damage to the spine and rear board and a small amount of damage to the last leaf. The text gives the quantity of dye needed for 100 lbs. of wool. The publishers are importers of dyestuffs, colors and chemicals from Badische Anilin- & Soda-Fabrik, Ludwigshafen, Germany. Undated, but before 1925 as in that year Kuttroff, Pickhardt & Co. merged with General Dyestuff Corporation. Rare .

All of them have a full page copperplate engraving in brilliant colors. Tere are also decorative initials, tailpieces and smaller illustrations. THe bifolium from 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses:" wraps the other bifolia and also contains the colophonL "exemplaire d'artiste. S. S." And on the front, an inscription from the artist: "Pour B. Mac-GUrrin En signe d'amitie. Sylvain Sauvage. 11 fev. 32" The recipient is likely Buckley Mac-Gurrin, muralist, whose papers are in the Smithsonian. One can speculate that Sauvage was presenting examples of his best work to the muralist. The bifolia are in near fine condition with only a little toning from age, and are protected in a custom marbled paper portfolio. Black cloth spine, gilt title, drab paper boards. Printed at the University Press, Oxford. One of 500 copies from a total edition of 650. Cloth has some fading and the gilt is rubbed, the corners are worn, else a very good copy. The scarce dustwrapper is significantly soiled, has loss at the spine's head and tail and lower edge, and a closed tear on the rear panel with creasing. .

Occasional light foxing; wear to the edges and spine; printed label nearly perished else very good. Later endpapers with the bookseller sticker of Heffer and Sons, Cambridge. Ownership name of C. J. Thrupp, 1814, on a preliminary blank, and a later bookplate of 'E.M.L' on the front pastedown. Rare; only 25 copies of the large paper edition were reportedly printed.

Upper board and pastedown artfully restored to style, lower hinge strengthened, light dampstain on the lower part of the first 50pp or so, else a very good copy. Selden's famous treatise on the study of Syrian mythology in the Bible which established the jurist's reputation as a leading scholar of Asian history. In Latin.
