Letter. 4 1/2 x 7"; 2pp; written on cream colored personal stationary, folded vertically to form two pages, one crease horizontally for mailing, stamped date at the top of the first page reading "OCT 23 1900," very good. Margaret Sangster (1838-1912) was a magazine editor and author who supplied verse, articles and stories to a number of publications. She edited children's and family pages for Hearth and Home and the Christian Intelligencer and was appointed editor of Harper's Bazaar in 1889. She regarded herself as a "Christian leader of women" and was interested in the welfare of girls. Originally opposed to woman suffrage, she changed her views about 1910 because she saw "the helplessness of woman as a competitor in the labor market when she has no voice in the making of the laws affecting her." In this letter, she discusses arrangements for the January 1901 issue of Cosmopolitan. NAW III, pp. 235. Feminist Guide, p. 946.

May (1829-1888), a prime mover in boston reform circles for more than 30 years, was active in charitable work, freedman's aid and women's suffrage. Bound: original wrappers housed in gray paper chemise and etui, fine. The text of Scheler's poem has been set in Cochin 20pt. by Francois Da Ros who also designed the special fold of the book. The lithograph of Bazaine was editioned at l'Imprimerie Arte. When opened the "pop-up" lithograph and text page measures 17-1/2 inches x 24-1/4 inches. Bazaine, a well-known French artist, has created a lovely page with the abstract litho interweaving with the text.

Original pen and ink drawing, 2-5/8 inches x 4 inches on white laid paper, pencil notation "Lucrezia Borgia" below drawing and "downcast eyes" to left of drawing, in original frame with thank-you note from Phyllis Feldkamp. Preparatory sketch by New Yorker cartoonist, William Steig, for Will Cuppy's THE DECLINE AND FALL OF PRACTICALLY EVERYBODY published posthumously by editor, Fred Feldkamp. Lucretia Borgia is the fourth of five historical personalities covered in Chapter 3, "Strage Bedfellows." The image as reproduced in the book the same as this original piece of art with the exception of Lucretia's eyes which are "downcast" as noted in Steig's hand as a correction to the left of the portrait. Lucy Stone (1818-1893) feminist, abolitionist and suffragist, had as a young woman decided against marriage; she would " 'call no man my master' " [NAW]. Henry Blackwell, seven years her junior, set out to persuade her that marriage need not be a constraint but a partnership.
