London: Readers Library, 1926. Photoplay edition issued to coincide with the British release of the MGM silent film swashbuckling epic starring John Barrymore, Mary Astor, and Myrna Loy. Very good copy with a thin split to the rear hinge in a very good dust jacket with a 1/2” chip at the head of the spine and some tiny tears and small chips. The front panel of the jacket is a full color painting of the dashing Barrymore kneeling to kiss the hem of Astor’s gown. The rear panel painting shows a pensive Barrymore leaning against a table toasting with a glass of wine.

Basis for the film biography of boxer Jack Johnson, which starred James Earl Jones. Yaphet Kotto replaced James Earl Jones on stage when he left the play to do the movie. Kotto began his acting career on Broadway and then in film, portraying Parker in Alien with Sigourney Weaver, and in television as Baltimore police Lieutenant Al Giardello in the hit series Homicide: Life on the Street.

Los Angeles, May 12, 1969. Original 155 page revised first draft screenplay printed on eye-rest green paper hardbound in black cloth with gilt-stamping. This copy belonged to casting director Eddie Foy III who has signed the script and laid in is a document signed by Foy providing provenance. The Great White Hope, the 1970 Martin Ritt boxing sports biographical melodrama starring James Earl Jones (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Jane Alexander (nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for this film), Lou Gilbert, Chester Morris, Hal Holbrook, Moses Gunn, and Robert Webber. Howard Sackler’s play won the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Award and Sackler successfully adapted his work to film. The story is a fictionalized veiled biography of legendary heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson, an incredible black African American boxer who encountered many problems due to his refusal to be treated as a second class citizen.
