Decorated endpapers with engraved ex-libris bookplate by the artist Anthony N. Euwer (American poet and painter 1877-1955) of a mountain scene in Gwent O Gwynedd (the Kingdom of Gwynedd in North Wales) on the front pastedown endpaper of both volumes. The name of a previous owner signed in neat ink hand "R. Ogilvie Crombie" on the page after the front free endpaper of both volumes. All edges red. 67 x 100mm. Contemporary cream parchment. Spines with gilt floral tooling and burgundy title-pieces with gilt lettering and scrolling decoration (slightly rubbed and age-toned). In original brown embossed cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Sympathetically rebacked, binding worn at corners and generally slightly soiled and well used, with darkened section at top. Some page margins slightly browned. Chapters include "THE PROGRESS OF INDUSTRIAL IMPROVEMENT", "INCREASE OF A RURAL POPULATION", "WANT OF EMPLOYMENT", "POOR LAWS", "CIVIL AND CRIMINAL LAW", "FUTURE PROSPECTS OF THE WORKING CLASSES". The 1834 New Poor Law altered the system from one which was administered haphazardly at a local parish level to a highly centralised system which encouraged the large-scale development of workhouses by poor law unions. Some sporadic foxing. 14 x 22 cm. Contemporary half calf. Spine in compartments with hand-tooled, gilt rules and decorative centerpieces (slightly rubbed and worn at the head). With interior view of the works. There is an error of page numbering from page 116 the pages start at page 201 to 260. NOTHING missing. Printers error. Green card covers a little handled, the first part faded and spotted on the cover and title page, though contents on glossy finish art paper have some minor signs of damp at some page top edges. Slim heavy quarto. 1946 (date taken from price list). *This was the company's 38th catalogue and one of the largest. Additionally inserted are the printed loose price lists for both parts, and several pages of hand written notes on setting up microscopes, on the Patna Microscope, two original invoices from W.Watson dated 1950, and two letters to Ilford Ltd. from Clare College Cambridge.
